MG MGF Technical - Metal strap around silencer
Someone referred to an "exhaust strap" on another thread, and I wonder if this is it. The other week I found that a metal "strap" from around the silencer had broken/corroded and was hanging loose and trailing on the road. I went to a small local garage who removed it, and said that I needn't worry about replacing it unless/until I replace the exhause system, and that the silencer was fixed to the car in a few other places, so no danger of it dropping off as a result. Can someone please just confirm that as far as they know, this is the case. The local garage in question is not known for being exceptionally good, but they did sort this out for free! Mine broke 6 months ago though it isnt dragging on the floor. havent bothered fixing it yet so all seems fine. |

Yep, I have the same problem, and have been running around with it like that for some time. Much the same sort of verdict from my garage and it got through the MOT as well. Andy |

Cheers guys. That's put my mind at ease. Diggers |

I think that was me on the other thread Diggers. B&G put some lowering knuckles, rear compliance washers and some new shocks on for me last week. They informed me that the exhaust strap was broken, and although not critical at the moment, would put undue pressures on other parts of the system over time if not replaced. To get it replaced is somewhere around £60 all in. Cheers Kieren |

I linked two metal tie wraps together and looped them over the silencer, cost £3, been on the car 18 months and no problems at all. |

I had this part replaced at the last service (in April). Cost was £18 + vat and fitting. HTH, Leigh |

Yep, that sounds about right. I think it was about £18 for the strap and £14 for the nuts (special ones) +fitting and vat. This worked out just short of £60 all in. Cheers Kieren |

The exhaust won't fall off as a result of this strap being broken - but it was there for a reason in the first place! Without the strap, there could be undue movement at the joint of the Cat and the silencer (which is a heavy piece of kit). This could cause a leak of exhaust gas under the car, so maybe fumes in the car or heating of the boot floor (fire hazard). The studs on the cat might break - they can be replaced individually but it's a PITA job to do. My advice would be to get the strap replaced and have a set of the MS stainless steel nuts done at the same time.... and then drive around happily. Until the next thing falls off! :-)) |
