MG MGF Technical - MG TF thermostat

Hi everybody from an Elise owner,
has any of you fitted the TF remote stat and plumbing to a MGF?

thank you all
Elise_s1

Hi,
not heard of any such conversion yet.
Fitted the remote thermostat some years ago (the Simon S type of remote) and it works very well. No more heavy temp cycling from the front radiator but a steady temp regardless of driving conditions...
Just the kind of treatment the 4 Coke cans suspended by rubber bands does need ;O)
See Dieters Tech site for more info.

We're working on it: getting the necessary parts from Rover is proving tricky though :o/
Rob Bell

Agree, Rob, been waiting about 5 weeks up to now. Regards.
H.R. Bridge

thank you for the replies.
any idea about the price of the stat + housing?
cheers
Elise_s1

Afraid I've lost my list, but all the bits for the TF come to around £200 inc. VAT. Regards.
H.R. Bridge

The 'stat, I think, weighs in at about 15 quid. The real cost in this conversion is in the hoses (as Roy indicates): the complete hose kit costs in excess of £200!!! :o/
Rob Bell

thank you all.
the complete TF hose kit is useless for the Elise. It just needs the stat + housing and maybe a Y spindle (the one to connect the heater return to the main pipe).
All the rest should be done/cut with general purpose rubber/silicone hoses and some straight alu piping.
needed parts should be:
PEM 101020
PEV 000010
could you please confirm these bits together are some 20 quid?
TIA
elise_s1

The elise heater uses a full flow radiator, and adjusts the air temp by directing air thru or around the matrix*, thus the only part of the hoses that are not 'just hoses' is not needed.

* I think
Will Munns

Yes, those are the parts you need - PEM101020 being the new thermostat.

Note that the existing thermostat is removed on the TF, although the old thermostat housing remains a part of the cooling circuit: the 82C thermostat being replaced by a spacer ring...

... see assembly figure on http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/hgf_pages/cooling_system_modifications.htm
Rob Bell

Hi Rob,
you mention 82C as original ?? Surely there is still 88C on both all "F"-variants as well as "TF" ?

Althou a change for 82C is a move in the right direction, keeps the engine slightly below the critical point...

BR, Carl.
Carl Blom

Carl, you're right of course! I was thinking of 82C replacements - but the standard is indeed 88C :o)
Rob Bell

Thanks to Victoria at the MGF Centre I now have all the parts necessary to retrofit the new thermostat to my '98 VVC.

Victoria has been looking out for a suitable donor engine for me since May last year. This is the first time an updated TF engine, with the new thermostat and plumbing, has become available. Hopefully, she will get more of these and you'll be able to source them from her.
