MG MGF Technical - MGF central locking

We have just purchsed an MGF VVC 1996 P reg the only problem is that it came with no remote key fobs for the central locking.Th dealer has contacted the previous owner who owned the car for 5 years and she says she never got any when she purchased the car.
I was under the opinion that all MGF's have remote central locking as standard?
Would i be able to get hold of a couple of remote fobs that could be tuned to the car and if so at what cost?
Or am i better gettting athatcham 1 system fitted that comes with new fobs?
Cheers

This is absolutely correct. Your car would have been originally supplied with remote central locking key fobs.

Yes, this shouldn't be a problem. If you purchased the car from an MG dealer, then they should really give you replacement key fobs and reprogram the MEMS/ 5AS immobiliser to accept them for free.

That's entirely up to you. The standard alarm/immobiliser is Thatcham 2 - so whether you feel the need for the additional security is up to you. BTW I am not sure that any soft top can ever be listed in category one because of the fabric roof?

Strange that there are no fobs, as you think you normally need them to start the car.

It sounds as though the entire alarm system has been taken out.

A replacement Fob will cost about £50 and another £25 to get it programmed. Your MGR Dealer will give you a price.
A Thatcham 1 system can be fitted. See http:/www.tracker.co.uk. If your car is stolen then for £600 a Radio signal is switched on which can be tracked by a police car. For £1000, a GPS locater gives Tracker Control the exact position of the car for the Police to pick up. This is effective in UK, France and Spain. Your Insurance may give a 5% to 10% discount.
Both are expensive options. You may compare the cost against what this may buy on the "Dark Side".

There are a few going on ebay at moment, they tend to go for about 20 quid. You'll just have to get them programmed.

Could the F be a re import from Japan. I seem to remember that cars supplied to Japan had lower security to reflect the the lack of scumbags in that country.

They had remote central locking too Patrick - but did away with the volumetric alarm. The fobs also work on a different frequency (local radio regulations I guess).

Maybe they got....fobbed off! :D

I have a 96 import with remote locking. I needed new fobs as the originals were worn out. It took the MG garage a couple of attempts to get the correct ones because of the different frequency that the imports work on.(I didn't relise that UK MGs made a noise when you locked them). I know I paid around £100 for the 2 but they programmed them for free for me because of the length of time it took them to get the correct ones. Even came out to my house to do it!!!
