MG MGF Technical - MGF Cup Race Car

Anyone have any idea of what makes up an MGF Cup Car? I have decided that after spending years kart racing I want to get an MGF race car and after watching the 1998 and 1999 series on video I am unsure whether to buy an already prepared car or to build one myself.
If someone can tell me about the make up of the cars (suspension used, engine, rollcage, extra torsioning etc) I would appreciate it.

Worth trying Brown & Gammons in Baldock, as they are able to provide you with advice, parts and even a fully prepared car. They have been involved in MGF competition I think from day one.

Best people to speak to are Techspeed Motorsport (www.tech-speed.co.uk) as they built/prepped the original Cup cars.
Personaally I think you would be better buying a ready prepped car as it would work out considerably cheaper.

There are a number of series to consider, but by the sounds of things you are looking to enter the MGCC racing series. There are two classes - one for the MGF Cup cars - and another for modified road-legal MGFs.

If considering racing with Cup cars, you practically have to buy second hand, as these were originally prepared by the factory and seam welded. Many cars were later modified by Mayflower to look like TFs - and these are probably the cars to go for. They run VHPD engines with dry-sump lubrication and throttle bodies. They are not road legal.

The MGF Trophy cars are also available to buy second hand - and as Steve says, this is the cheapest way to buy them. But as they are road cars, you could create your own reasonably easily following the class rules/specifications. Again, as Steve says, well worth talking to Techspeed about this as they've built a good number of these cars over the years, and have and I believe, continue to look after them to this day.

Good luck! :o)

The MGCC series is short of TF's this year. Many race prepared cars have not arrived that were racing last year, so there should be some ready to be bought, ready to go racing. The MGCC series race the TF's with the ZR's. If you contact the MGCC you should get the specifications required for the TF cars.

The other series you might be interested in, is organised by the MGOC. If you link through their website, through the racing page, you can access the specifications of this years cars. This indicates what needs to be done to race prepare a road car to race condition.

I have a mgf cup car built at mg & it came with a full set of build manuals. Send your email add. Or phone no & I will contact you with regards to getting you a copy run off.

Genuine MGF Cup cars are a serious proposition. Unfortunatelt the MG demise puts supply of spares at question. A more standard MGF race car is probably a better way to go.
Derrick Rowe

Perhaps you know more than me about this Derrick, but much of the car has out-sourced components supplied by specialists who, in the main, remain in business. Practically everything would be available -with the possible exception of suspension components: I don't know where the rose-jointed wishbones and suspension links were sourced from?

But over all, I would completely agree with you: the road-going series is probably the most sensible way forward, especially for a first time racer :o)

Rose jointed wish bones are a MGF special & very expensive. Also larger rear hubs.

And where does the sealed engine get souced from?

Derrick Rowe

Nah its okay. I'm sure I won't smash it up, although my previous outings do usually end up in a spectacular crash/accident. If only I had a video camera attached I would be a millionaire from YBF! lol!
Cheers for your help guys. I will go for a proper race prepared car as I like to have a good platform to work from and then develop the car later on. I reckon £6000 will bag me a good ex cup car as a referance point for anyone curious.
The Bandit

The larger hubs can, and have been, fitted to standard MGF suspension - so no real worries there. The engine is a VHPD - which can be sourced from a number of places. Originally prepared and 'sealed' by Janspeed. IIRC, PTP had a hand in this engine's development too.

Second hand, there are a number floating around; they were fitted to a number of high performance Lotus derivatives, and a number are being displaced in favour of other engine transplants... SELOC is a good place to browse if you're in the market for one. :o)

I know of a couple of cup cars for sale if anyones interested. I have been asked not to post the phone number but if you are genuinely interested let me or Roy at Techspeed know and we can put you in touch.
