MG MGF Technical - MGF Door locks

1998 vvc chas.No 500828 The passenger door lock has started to vibrate when locking. It looks as though there could be a plastic pinion gear that is starting to strip. There seems to be a few on ebay but they look a different type to my car.Does anyone know how interchangerble different year types are. If so what is the most robust type to fit,and where is the best place to buy one.If someone has already gone thro' this I'd be grateful for their thoughts

Hi Ron,

I don't have any great technical insight but in absence of anyine else replying here's my input.

I have had both the mgf and at present the tf and the door locks went on both of them. In looking the forst time its seemed to be a common and known problem. I just bought a replacement from MGF centre when the mgf went, I didn't try and replace any parts inside, but I belive you can do this, but as the cost wasn't too prohibitive and I din't wnat to be in the situation where I couldn't lock the car (other than by the key) I went for this, and never had anymore problems.

On the TF I had a similar issue and again replace the lock from Mike Satur and this was when I found there are differing parts, the sockets are different and you need to ensure th lock you get is compatible. Again I had no real problem as Mike satur knew from the year/ vin which was correct and would swap if turned out to be the wrong one.

Good Luck

At VIN XD507830 was the change to the other lock with different connector (IMO) .

500828 should have the MK1 lock. Wherein the newer could get converted to the old and reverse with some cable works.

Thanks for contributions so far. I wonder if a lock for another Rover car ie. a Rover 25 for example might fit be more likeley to be available on ebay or breakers.
Don't know how my location came up as Beds.

Try this - been through the same process recently! I don't know about compatibility between TF and MGF door lock wiring, but pre-2001 locks seem cross compatible... http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/door_lock/index.htm
