MG MGF Technical - MGF Engine failure... :(

Hello there,
nice to see the BBS is still there...

I just got a phone call from my garage. I had a breakdown last week, where the engine suddenly stopped. The result: one camshaft and two valves need to be replaced. The big service was due anyway, so I change the waterpump and cambelts along with the repair. All in all, a bit less than one month salary gone.

Bad thing: Next month, I wanted to do the big service anyway. If this bloody part lasted only 300 miles longer, the problem would have been avoided.

Good thing: 300 Miles less, and this would have happened on vacation in Italy, where noone knows what a "MGF" is, not to mention the extremely thin net of MG dealers... and, after the repair, the engine should be ok for the next few years...

Does anyone know what Rover used to charge (in term of working hours) for the "big service" with cambelt replacement?

Hi Alex

Nice to hear from you again BUT sorry to hear your problems - hope you get it all sorted soon.

Hi Ted,
yeah, otherwise all is fine... we moved to the countryside in a new flat and we enjoy life. Great to see the MGF community still exists (I should bookmark this page...)

maybe when the engine started to make some strange noises, I should have stopped or driven straight to the dealer. Well, I was on the way to my military service, and the last thing you want, is getting there late, so I maybe pushed it too far.

Otherwise still enjoy the MGF. Carine is as well still happy with the car, so no need to change any of them ;)

The service time, according to EPC, for the 60,000 mile/100,000 km service on an F is 5.2 hours.

Thanks!

Hi Alex

Just wrote you an email. Question is why did your engine failure happen? Obviously it was not the belt that snapped so maybe a broken pully bolt? Is it a VVC you have.

Cheers,
Cyril
