MG MGF Technical - MGF Expansion Tank Alarm

I fitted the system from Brown & Gammon,best thing i ever did why ? After having my Antifrezze replaced by a mechanic friend a few weeks later my alarm went off i had done a couple of hundred miles since the antifrezze had been replaced,thinking the worst HGF.
I had a sniffer test completed but it showed no trace of HGF?Then i decided to bleed the coolant system via the three points in the line system,this did get rid of a small amount of air,i think the alarm was set off by a bigger air lock.If i had not fitted the alarm i am sure i would be looking at the dreaded HGF.
Money well spent on a great alarm system and easy to install.

Once its fitted you really appreciate what you've got. No more checking the water level every trip and you just KNOW there is still coolant in that engine which is all you need to keep it safe. A leak from anywhere and the alarm goes off. Good idea is to periodically check the system by holding the float down for 10-15 seconds to check the alarm works as the system is not actually fail-safe.
I know a lady who ignored the alarm sound on hers, she thought it was faulty. You guessed it - another HGF !

It's just a pity that HGF is not caused by lack of water otherwise it would be the holly grail that could have saved MGR. :(

Thanks for the tip about holding the float down to check - just discovered mine does not work !!!

You're right Bob - but then again, this is an easily avoidable and sadly all-too-common cause of HGF which makes the kit such a good investment :o)

If the alarm sounds when you switch on the ignition all is basically OK, but not necessarily all connected. Have you tried giving the connector on the reed switch at the bottom of the coolant tank a real good push, it can take a lot to get it to finally lock into position and also make contact! Don't forget to hold the float down for 15 - 20 seconds.

I have checked the plug is fully on to the connector, but still no joy. If I loop the plug out it alarms after 10 secs. I think the switch/float may be faulty and am waiting for B&G response - they have offered already to replace the control box but I am sure thats not the problem

It took a while, but B&G sent me a new sensor for me to fit to the tank, I received it around 27.07.10.
Unit now works as expected, but be warned...... check your unit by depressing the float now and again. The self test checke the operation of the light, buzzer, and power supply only.
Having said all that I am very happy now it is working and this is not a complaint about B & G.

Even a test certificate only tells you when something last worked - keep up the regular checking!
