MG MGF Technical - MGF failed MOT due to EPAS failure

originally incorrectly posted on MGB Tech, so thanks for those who replied.

Hello all, My 'P' reg 'F' has just failed it's MOT due to the power steering not working, among other things. I was under the impression that this was not a problem and 'normal' steering was implemented when the EPAS was off. Of course I was quoted £900 + VAT + fitting to get a new steering column.
So 2 question Should it have failed the MOT?
And, the EPAS came on about 3 years ago along with the airbag light after it had been jump started a number of times. My imediate thought was electrical but the local garage wanted to replace everything (of course!) So any ideas what the issue could be?
Thanks
Nick

I have read up about cleaning the connectors to the ECU so will give that a go

Thanks

PAS failure is a fail because on most cars this would leave you in an almost drivable condition (you would have to manhandle the car to the edge of the road).

If you want to lose the lamp on the dash then remove the glovebox and look directly upwards,l the ECU has two connectors, remove the one with all the smaller wires and the lamp will no longer light.
Will Munns

It souns as is one of the fuses has blown, try them all including the one under the bonnet.
Andrew W Regens

I don't understand why 'EPAS failure' would be an MoT failure - unless the car is starting to turn left under its own volition...?
Rob Bell

Big fuse under the bonnet is EPAS. Check / replace, if no luck then remove the bulb. An F is easily drivable with no EPAS (got 185's on the front though I assume?)
Leigh

The F is easy to drive with 215s on the front without EPAS, although admittedly it's a little harder to park at slow speeds! LOL

Removing the fuse leads to illumination of the EPAS warning light. If you'd like to disable the EPAS without this coming on using a dash-mounted switch, see Will Munn's instructions here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/epas/epas_bypass.htm
Rob Bell

Rob (and Nick!), Will's posted instructions to stop the light appearing (other than removing the bulb) above.
Leigh Reid

True enough! :o) But I am a big fan of the EPAS switch :o)
