MG MGF Technical - MGF HOOD PROBLEMS

Just wondered if anyone has had a problem with the roof on their mgf folding back most of the way but stoping just b4 it goes right down.

To get it to drop you have to keep moving it up and down and then it will full down, does anyone else have or has had this problem please help.

thanks steve

Steve,

I think its a common problem! Mine is the same.

I find that if you slightly lift up the first bar on the hood (nearest the windscreen) as you put it down, then the roof goes down smoothly in one go.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for that advise Fiona i will soon try that out.

You're not alone on that one. Mine has the same problem. I find that once it goes as far as it can, then stops halfway down, lift it up and try to lower it as gently as you can. It might take a couple of goes, but it works on mine.

Folks,

Try the archives there are loads of stuff on the hood. I have never had a problem myself but then my mgf is 10 years old and is the older hood.

If you look on this forum and scrool down about 20 or so you will see a thread hood folding, read that

The problem is the front support bar that goes across the hood getting stuck in the folding mechanism.

To stop this, every time you fold the hood down, get in a position just before it usually sticks and with your free hand grab the afore mentioned support bar and push it upwards...

don't worry about moving in the wrong direction, when you try to move it, you'll see it only goes one way...

then it should fold down no problem.

You can also buy a pair of elastic straps designed to pull the bar forward automatically. These were designed for a Service Recall for the early TFs, but work just as well for the F. See your friendly MGR dealer.

Steve,

Wasn't you I saw driving through Old Woking the other day with the hood half down, presumably after trying to lower it at some traffic lights was it!? As the others have said, it's common and an easy fix - the work around is to lift the central bar as you open the hood, but the fix is the elastic TF recall straps which work a treat. See here:

Are you looking for a performance back-box Gary or a straighforward replacement? If it's just the standard one, try ebay, there's always a few of them floating around.

If it's performance, then there's several options to choose from, each of them down to individual choice ie tail design, volume etc
