MG MGF Technical - MGF Hot Start Problem

I am the proud new owner of an MGF 'P' reg 1997.

However, I have just discovered a problem with starting the car when it is hot. The problem is at it's worst when driving the car a fair distance to heat up and then stopping to get petrol, when I get back into the car it won't start for love nor money.

Waiting for about 15 - 20 minutes allows it to cool down enough to start.

Has anyone else experienced this? What was the solution?

Cheers

Does the starter turn the engine over?

If not then it sounds like a sticky solenoid on the starter. Easiest to just replace the whole starter if this is the case.

To really know you'll need to listen for the 'clack' of the solenoid...

Yes the engine does turn over it just won't fire.

VVC or MPi?
I'm clutching-at-straws here but you could try a stepper motor reset.
Turn the ignition on, push the accelerator to the floor five times, turn the ignition off.
If you got it from a Dealer take it back and see if the TestBook thing has any info.
Good Luck.

Russell

It's a VVC.

I'll try that thanks Russell.

Hello Sally,

I have the same or simular problem as you, i think.

In the morning, after a night rest in the garage, i could start my 1998 MGF VVC without any problem. But after driving it, even for a short distance like 3 or 4 miles, if i stop the engine and try to restart it, it won't start, or better to say, the engine starts but after 2 seconds it stops. Like something cuts off the fuel to the engine.
When i tried to start right after it stopped, the startengine turns but the engine doesn't fire. Only when i opened and close the car a few times with the key/remote control, I was able to fire the engine but still it stops after a few seconds.
I had to wait some hours before the engine would keep on running.

Problem is that all this happend when I was on holiday in Slowakia. I had to leave my car there and come home by rental car. The insurance company told that my car will be brought back to my MG garage in Belgium next week. So i don't know yet what the problem is.

I also posted this problem on a Belgium MGF-site but no solution so far.

I will keep you informed if I know something more.

Kind regards,
Geert
