MG MGF Technical - mgf rear window replacement

, Are there any opposing views to removing the rear window panel complete from the bottom frame bar and having a new panel inserted and resewn in. I dont think its nesessary to remove the top zip section.A sailmaker said mylar "as in a sail window" won,t tolerate tight stitching however a product called "stutex"may. I can deal with the water tight issue ok with soft seal tape being sewn in with the clear panel. anybody done this? thanks

the zip is a standard zip with an extra clasp to stop the head running all the way to the end, if you pry the legs on the clasp back then run the zip to the end it will open just like any other zip, no cutting required.
then open the hood and drill out the pop rivets, they go some way round the side, the hodd is wrapped around a metal strip which comes out and alows you to fold the screen and take it to your sailing shop.

with the whole screen including 1/2 zip then they can sew you a new screen in - I would take their advice on choice of plastic.

then you will need some long rivets to replace the ones you drilled and ... well nothing else, refitting the clasp is a bit tricky, but you can use pliers to save your fingers (I stabbed myself a bit)

Mylar is polyester film so it would either be much thinner (and possibly rustle in the wind) or if it was as thick as the standard stuff would be too thick to fold easily. It would also cost a lot more than the standard plasicised pvc.

Do see why mylar wouldn't sew though because that's how sailmakers normally fix it.

Just to agree with Will - the whole window section is very easy to remove (as you probably know), and splitting the zip straightforward.

If you look at the directions for replacing the rear screen, you can see how the panel comes out and goes back in again :o)

Just to add to Rob's webpage, you can also see details at....

The correct 'plastic' is 1mm thick and tinted pale green, and if you click and expand the 4th photo down, you'll be able to see the spec.

just an update and to those interested in an "el cheapo" repair. Because the original is welded both sides and top and to preserve the integrity of waterproofing the sailmaker has cut the pvc 10mm out from the canvas glued a black sailcloth 10mm strip as a border then stiched a 1mm clear pvc window on top of that using a sailcloth stitch to prevent cutting the pvc all this is hidden of course by the hood. looks original and cost around 15uk pounds. plus the pvc feels more pliable and therefore not prone to splitting. regards....

Rob,

I saw the rear window on your car at Silverstone and the fit on both sides looked a bit funny. Did you use an original spec window or an aftermarket one? In any case, are you happy with it and is it leak free?

Unfortunately, I had to replace the rear window again Per - the first replacement one had a bit of a problem, so I fitted a 'reclaimed' OEM rear window. And you're right, it doesn't seem to want to fit properly - which is thoroughly annoying.

I am not quite sure what the problem is, as the first window fitted perfectly (see pix on the web page) - but this one, the tension in the sides of the window appears lax. But it doesn't let water in, and it does effect rearward vision, so I am in no hurry to remove and attempt to improve fit...

Perhaps a case of a TF rear screen in a MGF hood? Not sure - I thought that the Mk2 hood design was common to all late MGFs and TFs up to the introduction of the 2005 glass rear screen roof?
