MG MGF Technical - MGF Ride height too low

Hi all,

My MGF 98 looks like it will scrape the ground with the underside. Far too low.

Just got the car and need to find out why it is so low. What can I do to fix it?

Your help is appreciated.

thanks in advance.

You need to find a garage with a hydragas pump. In the UK a lot of garages have them as the Metro (a small starter car to replace the mini) has the same suspension. I don't know if you ever got the Metro, if not then I guess you'll have to make a trip to the Rover garage.

The suspension is done by a combination of liquid and nitrogen, under the bonnet are two tyre valves which you pump the liquid into at about 400Psi, they do the left and right side of the car, some settleing is required between pumping and checking - search Robs site @ ultimate-mg

You need to pump up the hydrogas suspension every so often - doesn't necessarily mean that their is anything wrong with it. The ride height equates to 368mm + or - 10mm at 17 degrees celcius (approx 400psi). You allow slightly less than 1mm per degree difference (can't remember exactly). The measurement is taken from the centre of the wheel to the underside if the front wheel arch. The front and back are connected on each side, so you need to measure both front wheels. You'll notice a big difference in ride comfort when you get it pumped up to the correct height.

Have a look in the archives. There is years of valuable information on the F there.

Thats exactly what I needed to hear.!

I did take off the plastic cover under the bonnet and saw the two extra "tyre valves" but as I just got the car home today, I could not have guessed what they were for.

You all have been extremely helpful.

Many Thanks.

B kRT,
Leave us a name, can't keep calling you that !

How about that for service, you couldn't get that from MG itself.

Like you I am new to MG's, 10 weeks now and I have learnt so much, it really is the best and most supported single marque in the world, read through other threads you have plenty of company in Aus.

Will,
I will hunt for a local place that can pump it up. I hope the the onboard level system doesn't have any leaks etc. May take some time to trace and fix.

David,
I am now going thru the archives and there appears to be loads of good info. It will take some time to go thru it.

Dieter,
Thanks for the links. I had browsed at the site and it has so much info. Great site.

Adrian,
It's Branko. (I have just changed my profile.)
I just bought the car with known problems, but I am prepared to fix her up.
Yes I rely on forums for lots of things and this appears to be one of the best.

Thanks all.

Branko, where in Victoria do you live, there are a few F non authorised places that can help you.

Hi Andrew,

In Greensborough. Melb.
Where abouts are you?

What are the MG places that you have listed?
That would be of great help.

Also do you know where I can get a cheap (if there is such a thing for MG's) clutch kit?

Thanks.
Branko
