MG MGF Technical - MGF Roof

Can anyone advise me on how to restore my MGF Roof back to a nice black clean looking roof? I bought the car last year from a private sale who had kept th car in a garage and dust and sawdust has got into the roof leaving a very dirty looking roof. I've tried back to black, boot polish!! (i Know). I just would like some expert advice.

Thanks
Leigh Martin

Buy a RENOVO restoration & protection kit.

Clean roof with a hood shampoo & let dry.

Brush Renovo black restorer into fabric & let dry.

Optionally, give it a second coat.

Brush Renovo waterproofer into fabric & let dry.

Do not try a second coat as it just runs off onto your shoes.

Repeat 2 - 3 times a year.

Renovo products available by post from Brown & Gammons (see advertisers list of this bbs).

Also available at slightly better prices direct from Renovo but I can never remenber their url.

SOmebody will be along soon with the info.

B&G will send you one package containing all the Renovo prodcucts, while I received 5 (I guess) packages (all containing 1 item) when I ordered from Renovo directly.

Not really impressed by the Renovo products as the gray color showed up again in a rather short period of time. Maybe I need to try it again as soon as the weather's better (and if I've got my car back)

Hi,

Leigh, part of the problem might be treating what you've already applied to the roof!

I have no experience of using any product on my hood as it is still in reasonable condition after five years, with a few marks on the rear quarters where it suffers when folded. One day I'll have to do something about these.

I should have advised giving your hood a good hoovering, then washing well with a good washing up liquid (and water!), then rinsing and padding dry with a synthetic chamois. Repeat until satisfied. Then you would be able to see what you had. You could still try the washing/drying, several times I think.

Boot polish has a use, on tyres and black plastic parts (I don't clean my shoes). Probably not on a hood, but not by a mile as bad as that horrible back to black stuff. A more vile concoction of acids, dyes and silicones I have yet to meet. My wife uses it on the black trim on her car, and it's a greasy mess afterwards, staining the paintwork, until the next wash. And does it ruin sponges and chamois (don't know what the plural for chamois is), and leave greasy rings in the buckets.

I am not a fan of back to black. Chuck it in the dustbin. I have yet to find a good product for black plastic trim.

So, repeat the wash/dry technique until the roof is back to untreated form, then take a considered look at some proper hood renovation products. I hear that the Porsche renovation kit is good. Do BMW do a kit too? Compare the hood material with the MGF's, so that the kit will match.
