Ben.

The Level should allways remain the same, if you are having to top up the coolant every few weeks or so it stands to reason this lost coolant must be going somewhere!.

Allways check levels when cold as it will rise when engine is hot!!.

You will need to check for leaks, around engine bay, the radiator and the underbody coolant pipes which run front to back on your car, also check your coolant bottle cap, these have a habit of failing when hot and under pressure allowing coolant to escape.

Also check your oil, make sure there is no signs of white gunge on the dipstick (Mayo), this could be a sign that the coolant is mixing with the oil which means the dreaded HGF!!.

THANKS FOR THAT MARK,

WHEN TAKING THE OIL LEVEL I DO FIND THAT SOME TIMES BUT NOT EVERYTIME THERE IS A SLIGHT BIT OF GUNK IN THE OIL BUT IT ONLY SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR A WHILE, ALSO THE HEAD GASKET WAS DONE ABOUT A YEAR AGO.

ALSO THE WATER ONLY SEEMS TO DROP TO A CERTAIN POINT THEN SETTLES, MAY BE IT COULD BE THAT CAP LETTING BY UNDER PRESSURE.

A little gunk on the dipstick is normal if the car has not been used, this will just be condensation, and should go when engine has been warmed up for a while.

The Level should be at the seam on the bottle (when cold), if you overfill then this excess will be lost!.

Thanks mark

Just wondered if maybe i was filling up the water level too much then, is there a marker i am not seeing i fill it to about centre meter over the seal line round the bottle then it drops to about half a centre meter below that line every time

Ben,

look deep inside the expansion tank through the filler hole.

Would appreciate any information on the following item as a first time MGF owner. I have a 1998 MGF , purchased only 2 months , I have noticed a coolant water leak under the car dripping from one of the coolant return pipes close to the floor pan , is there a valve under this pan, or could it be coming from the heater ? Any help much appreciated.

Whereabouts is the leak? Front, middle or rear?

Derek.

If you mean the skid pan which the coolant pipes go under, then it sounds like it could be the steel pipes themselves that have rotted!. :o(

They are not very expensive to replace, you just have to be VERY carefull when re-filling with new coolant that you bleed the system right, otherwise traped air can lead to HGF!!.
