MG MGF Technical - MGF Water Pump

I think my Water Pump has had it, do you have to remove or drop the Engine to replace it? My mechanic friend has never done a Water Pump on an MGF so he is unsure .... any advice ?
Marc

What makes you think there is a problem with the water pump?

No you don't have to drop or remove the engine to replac it, but it is advised practise to replace the cam belt at the same time, witch requires supporting the engine whist removing the engine mounts (the cam belt runs around the mount)

Well I was going down the motorway and all the water gushed out, it was like a Formula 1 car blow-up :)

I have been putting water in as the hoses leaked, but the AA took the car to a dodgy garage who wanted £700-£800 quid to fix it, I got the garage to patch it up and drove it home OK.

I know a good mechanic who is also a personal friend - he's changed the hoses now (they needed changing) and he says to change both the Water Pump an Cam-Belt but he's never done this on an MGF (hence the question).

He said that a cam-belt is £15-$20 and a water pump is £30-£40 but obviously he's trying to give me an idea of how much it will cost for the labour element ...

Has anyone on here changed the water-pump ?
Marc

The water pump is effectivly 'free' in labour terms if you are changing the belt as all the work to get to it is the same. The cost is in coolant and possible airlocks. (coolant should be changed every two years)

That said I would only change the water pump if it were leaking or squeeling, leaking is a failed o-ring gasket, squeeling is the only real water pump failure, and it's a big time failure (strips teeth from the cambelt if it siezes).

It's 26Mb - how is your ISP?

Simon.
If you are really serious in getting into DIY, then I would suggest that you go for the MGR CD. It is expensive at £50 but then will save you a lot of pain and hassle in the future.

Regarding diy on the k-series,recently i changed the hg as it was shot to an upgraded(?) hg with steel dowels, unfortunately the automatic timing belt tensioner bolt decided to work loose (it was torqued correctly).

The timing was lost causing all sixteen valves to be damaged. I bought an exchange cylynder head from Naismiths of Croydon for £380.00. The engine is now up and running but every so often one or more tappet(s) becomes noisy, which is very frustrating, because I do not think it warrants a head strip down to find the offending tappet(s). What do you think?

Once again many thanks.

Are the tappets etc from the head that suffered from the timing failure? If so, a precautionary strip down might be a sensible precaution. Mind you, if the tappet noise is predominantly on start up, it may be something simple like a low oil level or a sticking tappet - the latter frequently cured by a decent oil flush.

Rob

The tappets came with the recon head,I have been told the tappets have to bed in ,but when, i had done 2k and they are still noisey.

once again Rob thank you very much for the k-series download.

On monday I had a the same thing happen to me: Water Pump failed, cylinder head gasket went, oil and water mixed. I have had the gasket done, a new water pump, the head skimmed and the cam belt replaced for £500 inc vat. Your quote is way to much.
