MG MGF Technical - Mk 1, MK2 ?

Dear All,

Please help me. What is an MK1 and MK2. which years are the MK1 Mgf's manufactured in, and MK2 ? What does mk stand for?

Many Thanks

Philip

Mark 1 pre 2000
Mark 2 2000-2002

The differences are well documented, but briefly:

modifed head gasket
different exhaust
different wheel options
colour coded windscreen surround
revised interior
revised ICE system

>modifed head gasket
I thought this was coincidental ie it didn't happen at exactly the same time as the MK1/MK2 switch
Will Munns

I'm not sure, it obviously wasn't advertised much by the manufacturer for obvious reasons. Though, I would consider it a benefit of a mk2 MGF as AFAIK they all have the revised HG

The switch to metal head locator dowels and a modified uprated head gasket occured just prior to the introduction of the 2000 MY model - but is far easier for simple folk like me to say 'get a MY2000 because it has upgraded gasket components' as these models are easy to identify.

Not sure what the introduction VIN number was - we need to ask Doctor Data ;o)

Ah, I though it was the other way around, this way means of course to all extents and purposes Darrens original reply was correct.

Sorry

The most obvious differences are cosmetic as detailed by Darren above. Mechanically, I think the most significant difference was the introduction of a new version engine management unit in the 1.8 model and also the introduction of a new 1.6 version. Also top coils were introduced to all engines and an extra oxygen sensor introduced after the catalyst.

A couple of other things I remember were the one shot driver window and electric mirrors.

Or maybe the 1.6 was introduced at the same time as the Trophy?

Regarding the introduction of steel dowels, according to an MGR technical bulletin dated 30/5/01 they were introduced to all K series engines approximately from the following vin numbers:

MGF RD 527784
R25 RF 585534
R45 RT 543110
R75 RJ 208514

or to all engines produced from March 2001 onwards from engine numbers 413284 (assembly 1) and number 667323 (assembly system 2)

Indeed, the new HG came almost a year after the Y2K model. I am living pissed-off proof of this. I got one of the last Y2K VVCs with the old HG.

Except that it failed and I now have a new one.
David Bainbridge

Jeepers, this who timing of introduction thing is confusing... Will, you were right - HGs were upgraded *after* MY2000. But other improvements had been made before that to curtail the increasing endemic of HGFs. Just don't ask me what they were ;o)

I'm off to the home for the terminally confused ;o) LOL
Rob Bell

The MK2 actually made an appearance late 1999, although we do tend to use the MY2000 to refer to this model it is a little misleading.

To answer the last of the questions from Fubu_box

<What does mk stand for?>

Mk is short for mark.

Spyros ? ;)

covers the whole collection, though some gaps to be enlightened still.

I miss the VIN of the first made LE 75 !!!
CALL FOR LE75 OWNERS from all over the word to send their
- VIN,
- Edition No.,
- the hood colour,

http://www.mgfcar.de/vin/vin_survey.htm

---snip from the site to echo Paul:
Since about Juli 1999 the MGF MK2 (MY2000) is in production (first about VIN YD511060)
The amount of built MGF MK1 could be about 52975 units.

Me too. Well annoyed and even worse it appears that the sods didn't replace the inlet manifold gasket with the new type. I would doubt if I got the new type head gasket and dowels.

If you want something done right don't take your car to an MGR dealer ( Rip off merchants in my experience 63 quid to change the oil wise up. )!!!!!!!!!!!!!

S Laithwaite

Rant over for the time being.

Aggggggggggggh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Worse still the pathetic creature at the dealer looked at me like it was my fault the damn thing blew. Last time I spend 18,200 pounds for the pleasure of some twat looking like he was God's gift to the combustion engine.

Sorry could't help myself but they really were pathetic.

>>>>>I would doubt if I got the new type head gasket and dowels.

When was it replaced? Mine was in the last few weeks and they confirmed that it was the new HG - I assume they don't make the old HG any more.

I doubt they'd have used old stock on your car, as Mantles don't seem to keep HGs in stock - but that's a long long long story....
David Bainbridge

Believe me they would use old stock at this partiular branch of the dealer. I say this as the inlet manifold gasket is black and it was replaced 10 months ago!

Tired and grumpy today, just got the car back with a nice new windscreen A mere 123 pounds for the genuine item. Pity the monkeys who put it in couldn't manage to put the trim within half an inch of where it's meant to be.

Could not be bothered asking for them to fix it. Do it myself probaly safer.

See told you I was cross.

Ps. Had to argue for 3-4 hours with Auto glass and Royal Sun Allianace for the genuine Rover Part. Eventually got there at an addional 83 pounds.

Pps. The car is green. Never again !!!!!

From Dieter's VIN data page...

>> 1996 - boot lid no longer over 90° <<

Not on my early 1996 Dieter, i had to buy the rubber stops after i bought my hardtop and descovered the boot lid caught it.

>> 1996 - rubber hose at both mirror handles <<

Again, my early one was supplied without them (still haven't got them)

So we can assume that these changes happend after February 1996.

Other than that, very impressed Dieter, obvious that loads of work has gone into this page. Well done.
