MG MGF Technical - my baby's poorly

okay .. bought my 97 mgf (k series) 6 months ago.. everything looked perfect..1. have problem with passenger door ..won't open from outside..had inner panel off.. can't get mechanism to stay where it should..2..when i brake fog light comes on..when i brake and indicate indicator light flashes quickly..looks like earth problem but i'll be buggered if i can find it...any ideas?..

The usual culprit for wiring issues is the harness breaking between the rear bulkhead and the bootlid, often the boot courtesy light is the first to go - is that working ok?

The electrical gremilins shout an earthing problem, and I completely agree with Bandit, the loom to the boot lid is the usual culprit for most electrical wierdness on an MGF!

Regarding the passenger door handle, funnily enough, mine's just done this too. I haven't yet had an opportunity to take the door card off, but I wonder whether some one has tried to open the door when the car has been deadlocked, either pulling off the linkage to the handle lever, or more irritatingly, snapped it.

Fortunately, I do have spares - and I'll see what the problem on my car is and I'll let you know Jeremy; and if you get there first, please do let me know! :o)

Thanks for the thoughts...courtesy light is fine..had a wiggle with the connections lunchtime thought i'd cured it ..started again on way home..guess i'll have a look at that harness..thanks again.

To Rob the handle problem turned out to be a loose screw ..if you haven't already you need to remove the door handle completely..BAH!...To Bandit..light problem may be fixed ..fingers crossed..New problem ..replaced water pump , cambelt , tensioner , ht leads , dist cap & rotor arm , turns over fine .. won't fire..any thoughts ?

First check is that you're getting a good spark on each of the plugs - anything less than blue-ish and strong won't give a good bang. And I'd be lying if I said I'd never accidentally got two leads crossed over...

Electrical connections that have hitherto been perfectly happy can take offence at being unplugged & re-plugged. Many are the gremlins that have been cured with a clean-up of connectors with electrical contact spray and if particularly corroded a nail file might be the tool of choice.

It'll be something simple, for sure ;o)
bandit

Thanks for the reply bandit...It was a schoolboy error.. thought i'd fitted the lead to the coil securely..obviously NOT...

Electricity is such a stickler for detail!

Yup, discovered this too - and had the same problem: the spring had become dislodged. Have written a how-to for anyone else having a similar problem: http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/exterior/exterior_handles.htm

Hope all's now fixed Jeremy?
