MG MGF Technical - New carpet for F/TF hood well/parcel shelf

This may be of rather limited interest, but I thought I would still mention it here, to get it on the record (and in the archives).

The other day, I bought a new black carpet for the hood well/parcel shelf of my TF 160 (the old one had been damaged). To my surprise, I noticed that the new carpet was no longer made of the same amalgamated fibres stuff but, instead, was made of hard(ish) plastic with a thin layer of fabric glued on top, to maintain the looks of the old one.

In practice, this means that the new carpet is much easier to fit, in particular as regards the back edge. It is now very easy to get a perfectly neat fit of the carpet into the slot of the back rubber seal, thereby making the whole hood well look much tidier with the hood up. I even got the impression that the noise level in the cabin was lowered a fraction with this new carpet (makes sense, I guess: harder material and tighter fit between rubber seal and carpet edge).

Still, I wouldn't say anyone should replace their existing carpet, but if a replacement is needed, make sure to get the new spec item.

Per,

You need to watch the dimensions though, i had a real struggle refitting one of these later style parcel shelf lining to a TF 135 a few weeks back, it was just slightly too big and thus was difficult to refit.

MGR quality control again eh? ;-)

Other than this i agree, the newer style parcel shelf lining is an improvement over the old one.

I see what you mean, Andy... I guess quality control is one of these things MGR is saving money on... :-/ Oh well, I suppose survival is a good cause...

By the way, hands up all those who have at least once got their car back from a dealer with this carpet perfectly refitted into its slot...

Hmm, thought so: can't see a single hand out there! I guess this is the typical example of the fitting solution which looked good on the designer's drawing board but which turned out to be too care and attention demanding for your average stressed MG technician... ;-)

LOL :-)

My hands weren't raised!! :-)

Thanks for the advice Per. I probably might just buy the new item because i can't get mine to fit under the back of the T-bar any more. which looks rather ugly hood down... what did you pay for it?
Anthony Braham

Anthony,

I'm afraid I threw away my receipt, so I can't go back and check the exact price (bought some other stuff at the same time, so only remember the total sum). Still, I think it was something like €50 for the carpet.

Sorry,

Per

P.S: The new carpet will certainly solve your problem since it overlaps a good 2cm or so with the edge of the T-bar and, thus, looks very tidy also from that angle.
