MG MGF Technical - New TF - 2000 Miles - Engine Oil Leaks !!!

I bought an effectively MG TF 135 5 months ago from SMC Rover in Slough. It had 2 miles on the clock and was registered 5 months previously by SMC.

I have done 2000 miles since then but it has started dropping significant amount of oil.

I have taken it back to SMC and they say it needs a new oil pump (?) at £350+, a new pressure sensor at £35+ and 4.5 hours to fit it all.

Given the warranty was gone up the spout - I queried the guy at SMC, who said he was none technical...

Q Are they pulling my plonker or are these prices valid for such spare parts? They state that they are charging cost price and not retail. I cannot identfify such parts of the MG Owners Club site.

Seems pricey to me ?

Says who? You bought a car from SMC, and they are still in business. You should have at least 12 months warranty from your supplier (that's SMC *not* MG Rover)- check with Citizens Advice or trading standards.
How did you finance the deal ?
If your loan was specifically for the car (not a personal loan) then they are jointly liable. If a 3 year warranty was part of the deal and is no longer valid that's the suppliers problem.
I once bought a computer system - the supplier went bust, but the finance company paid for an equivalent maintenance contract.

Tell them you want it sorted, at their cost, and you need an equivalent courtesy car while they do it. And while they're doing that they can sort out a 3 year warranty, as per the original contract.

Fair points - I am wondering whether I am helping to subsidise a failing dealership...

Purchase was through trade in and cash. I will investigate Citizens Advice further etc

Thanks

James,

>It had 2 miles on the clock and was registered 5 months previously by SMC<

Thru my experience it usually takes a lot more than 2 miles for the dealer to "prepare" a brand new car for customer delivery. Things like road testing, tuning, checking for strange oil leaks, etc, can put on at least a few extra miles.
I wonder if the car has actually been prepared for customer delivery/acceptance.?

Cheers,
Branko.

Apart from consumer rights and all that I think the prices you where quoted are ridiculus. A new oil pump should be less than 90 pounds and you should be able to get a repair kit for about a tenner.

Oh and the oil pressure switch is well under £10.

You should be protected through the sale of goods act, with the age of your TF you could argue that it is not "fit for purpose" (this is the phrase in the act that goods sold have to be fit for purpose) under the act they either have to fix it to your satisfaction or refund / replace. I would definately check with your local trading standards office as if this garage can get away with it once they will probably try it again on another customer.
