MG MGF Technical - NFC: where are the spark plugs on the Peugeot 306?

Been driving the in-laws Peugeot 306 recently. It's a 1.6litre, so not especially spritely, but this car is a real slug. Something is seriously not right.

Had a quick look the other evening: the crankcase breather pipe had become detached from the airfilter housing, and there was oil in this general area. There wasn't much oil left in the sump either come to that!!!

No abnormal noises with the engine running, but there seems to be a fearsome draft from the breather pipe - made me begin to wonder whether there was a leak past one of the gasket's fire rings...

Okay - easy, I thought. I'll do a compression test. But, erm, where are the spark plugs??? Can't find them: fuel injectors, yes. Spark plugs... oh dear.

Anyone here familar with Peugeots?

They should have bought an MG Rover! ;o) LOL

Got a 406 Rob but aint had to look for the plugs yet BUT I should imagine they are in the cylinder head:-)

Mind you Rob I would be a bit thick if I did look for spark plugs in our 406 - its an HDI!

LOL thanks Ted! ;o)

Y'know, I kinda figured that they'd be somewhere in the cylinder head - but they are well hidden from view!!!

BTW I can't believe you bought a Peugeot! LOL ;o)

Spark plugs: they're not on top the cylinder head - as they are on a K-series 16v. The front of the engine is all exhaust manifold and heat shield. The back of the engine is somewhat crowded: inlet manifold, plenum, throttle body, fuel injectors - and somewhere in all that lot, must be the spark plugs (I presume with individual coils - there's no coil pack obvious, and it's a wasted spark type engine managment, so no distributer either). It's just that I don't know how best to access them.

I get the feeling that Peugeot rather you didn't, and you return the car to a main dealer. But since it was probably a main dealer that left the car in its present condition, what do you do?
Rob Bell

Rob, do you still need the info as I have a Haynes manual in my 306 and I can go out to the carpark and get it!

More for curiousity now Tony - but yes please :o)
Rob Bell

Rob, cann't you follow the plug leads ? Mike
Mike (London Office)

Mike, I know, it sounds stupid, but I couldn't identify any HT leads. I suspect that they're burried away under some plastic shrouding. As I didn't have my tool kit handy, and I wasn't planning on staying long, I didn't want to take the engine ancillaries apart...

it's a good question! Peering at the book they seem to be on the rear face of the head next to the injectors - usual Haynes thing, "remove plugs"! This TU engine looks the same as my old Visa and they almost faced backwards on that and were hard to get at and easy to cross thread. To adjust the tappets you had to do the lower set from under the car with the cover off(obviously) wich meant a lot of oil in the face! Plug torque is 25Nm/18lbf. The poor picture shows a dizzy facing upwards on the battery end of the engine but later on in the book is a different arrangement with the leads mounted end on to the cam and in a waterproof bag - who knows! My 306 is a 2.0 16v and the plugs are where they should be but covered by an ignition module with a coil per plug wich pushes on to the plugs keeping everything nice and dry. Commpression testing says anything less than 10bar is a bit sickly. HTH

Yup, that figures.... they must be burried in there with the inlet manifold. What a nightmare. No wonder many mechanics dislike working on Peugeots! LOL

You plobably need special tools as well (for weird angles).
