MG MGF Technical - No gears ... arrgh

Looks like my gear selector cable just snapped ... can't engage anything. I have the MS slick shift fitted. The gearstick can move the full width from left to right whilst b4 it was quite tight. I can still just about find the 'notches' but nothing engages.

Guess I'll need to route around under the gearstick and under the car right ?

Could it be the ball knuckle thing under the gear box? Look under the rear of the car and you may find the gear selector needs to be popped back into its socket. Techspeed shift fixes this problem.

When did you have it fitted ? I also had a similar problem with my ssk2 model and I believe Mike S did on Treffen last year.. I think you'll find the thread has snapped at the bottom of the stick... If your lucky you will be able with a little care to unscrew the lower broken bit and there might be enough thread left to screw it back in until you get a replacement from Mike

Right ... I decided to investigate ... afterign searching the archives and seeing the amount the dealer would charge.

Gear cables are fine ... relief ... but the cross bolt which comes from the 'u' shaped bracket passes thru the gear stick and into the lever which attaches to the lower cable has snapped/sheared off.

Hence when I move the stick the upper cable moves fine but not the lower. I've got the console off and am awaiting the parts from MS.

I'll take some pics as I'll have to refit everything at the gear lever end.

Gaz, at what point did this happen? I hope you weren´t changing gears as it happened!

David,

It happened in the driveway just as I was engaging 1st ... luckily it snapped whilst in neutral.

I've got one of the original kits and as such Mike re-used some of the Rover parts. Mike's SSK2 kit is a complete machining of all the parts so hopefully it shouldn't happen to you.
