MG MGF Technical - Noise just above 2000rpm

Our 98 VVC has developed a strange buzzing noise just above 2000 rpm. Its not noticable when stationary and seems

Hmmm...
I thought I'd pressed cancel as I'd decided I couldn't fully describe the behaviour of the noise and wanted to have another listen.

More later :)...

There can be exhaust issues, but have you checked the plastic inspection flap in the grill. I found mine was buzzing on the coolant cap. With a bit sticky back foam in place it's been fine for years now.

OK lets try again.
Thanks Pete but it isn't that, but it does sound like it could have been.
The noise has got worse over the last week, now louder and also at just under 3000 rpm.
It only happens under load, and does change depending on the load (but not in a way I could describe). It does not happen on the drive any suggestions how to pin-point the source.

John,

I have no idea what it sounds like, but the VVC has a known history of cam bolt failure. There was a recall at the time - see

http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/recalls/MGF_recalls.htm#r2

As this is potentially catstrophic you may want to have someone with knowledge of this to take a good look before driving any further.

I'm sure it will turn out to be something much more innocuous, but better to be safe than sorry!

Exhaust downpipe flexi section ??

Thanks for the heart failure Dave.

It was the flexi section/down pipe. Not blowing just resonating.

All is now well after a trip to an Exhaust centre.

Phew! Sorry to raise the spectre, but I thought you should know of the possibility. I'm glad it was something so simple.
