MG MGF Technical - Not again! lowering knuckles

Having just had the car serviced and some parts replaced at Techspeed, they found that the lowering knuckles had completely disentegrated again but luckily this time the they had not welded themselves into the upper wishbone so saved a fortune.

So far I have required 3 new knuckles last MOT I need a front one which also resulted in a new upper arm, know this time both rears but no new upper arm thanks to a can of WD40 (or similar) and a hammer.

Next time I might just go back to original knuckles which nearly happened except could not get hold of any at short notice.

Yet again the boys at Techspeed did wonders and that was also after getting there late due to A34 getting closed on the way up so instead of a 2 hour trip a nice 4 hours with nearly 2 sitting in traffic jams.

Cannot recommend them enough.

Try changing to Trophy items Tom - they're adonised (or similarly coated) - so should last longer :o)

I think I will be going back to the original and then have the cone and knuckle machined like the cup cars were done to get the ride height. The only reason I have lowering knuckles is because I had it lowered prior to going to Techspeed.

I will see how it goes before I spend more money.

How many miles have you had your lowering knuckles in for and where did you get them from ?

I have a set of MS to fit when i get time !
GO

I got around 60K miles from my first set.

They came from B&G and have done a good 60K but if I had kept the original knuckles and went the proper Techspeed method in the first place there would not have been the same problem.

There is a huge difference between the std and lowering knuckles as with lowering knuckles the joint part is actually reduced and thus allows less movement and breaks up.

Go for that, mate.
Drop them and change to standard. I'll do the same (nearly) and cut the unit pistons instead asap.

The problem with the stress on the strong misaligned dust gators on the short knuckles is not worth to having another try and error change with the lowering knuckels.

PS. a second set of pictures appreciated by email please
Dieter K.

Sorry Dieter I did not bother taking my camera with me and there was not much left to take a picture of as they where similar to my front one completely knackered and would have been a MOT failure.

total novice question sorry, but what are the reasons for changing to these,i presume for a lower ride height,...?.. thanks mel..
m e johnson

Yup, basically Mel. The Knuckles serve as a slight aid to handling by lowering the ride (and with the centre of gravity) without a reduction in hydragas pressure. They also have the added bonus of making the car look more like a sportscar and less like a Freelander.
