MG MGF Technical - occasional misfire

Since I got my 1.8i 7½ years ago (it's a '96 model), I have very infrequently had brief spells of misfiring. There is an obvious loss of power, as if one cylinder isn't firing 100%. If I continue with a light foot for up to about a mile, it clears and usually doesn't re-occur for months. Is there any known cause and/or fix? So far it's never happened when I'm trying to overtake!

Hello
I think that you should start with basics.
Spark plugs, leads, dist cap and rotor.
When was the air filter and fuel filter changed last?

New Magnicor leads have sorted this for me. Tough wood - no occurances since I fetted them.
Steve Ratledge

It still does it after all the leads, cap, plugs &c have been replaced. It doesn't fit with filter problems - I reckon they would show up as a continuous problem, whereas this is randomly intermittent. It's almost like an external interference, but a) I don't keep my mobile on, and b) it never seems to do it twice in the same place. I feel it's more likely to be an electrical connector - but which one???

I have very occasionally experienced a misfire following the car being parked in the rain when the humidity is high, disappeared as the car warmed up so was clearly down to the damp.
Paul Walbran

Hi Paul
I also had problems with rain and damp until I replaced the coil - the original version on the side of the engine block. I was even having to put a fan heater under the car if it had been in the garage for a few days!
