MG MGF Technical - OIL SPEC FOR VVC

Hi all, I have a 1999 vvc MGF.Im struggling to nail down the correct oil type,as recommended by the manufacturer.I have been told that the VVC has a different viscosity requirement than the 1.8i as the cam gear is pressurized.I think the ELISE is 0w-60 for that reason. Thanks in anticipation.Bob.

Hi Bob,

The archive threads will provide loads of info and opinions regarding oil choice, especially the merits or otherwise of synthetics or semi synthetics. I think some people have had increased cam follower noise or other problems when changing to synthetics other have not. The manual just states oli should meet spec ACEA A2 where available or API SH or SJ. I use Shell 10W/40 (which is Ok for a locality temperature range of -20C to +40C) in my Trophy with no problems.

Thanks Terry,Just looking thru it seems the danger of changing to a synthetic is the amount of flushing required before the introduction, I am aware of out board motors that folded because the two oils formed a sludge blocking the odd passage.Ill go with the 10/40,Is the tropy a vvc? Thanks for your help.

yes!

The little sheet on MGF lubricants that can with our 97 F does not differentiate between oils for the VVC and MPi and offers a range of everybody's oil in the 10-40 range as well as the synthetics like Mobile 1.

We have used Mobile 1 in our VVC since the first service at 6k miles and 50k miles later it is still running very quietly (or is my hearing just worse?).

I am not sure experience with an outboard can be carried across to a car engine but if in doubt, you could always run a flushing oil through.

Bob,

I've mostly used Castrol Magnatec 10w40 in my '97 VVC, seems fine.

thanks KEW,

From a non-technical perspective our VVC sounds better from cold with Magnatec.
