MG MGF Technical - Oil Temp - Is it Too High??

I purchased an MGF last week after months of searching. I'm very happy with the drive but I'm a little concerned with the Oil temp. The car is a W reg (2000) 1.8 VVC, 60,000 on the clock. The oil temp rises to 120 degrees normally within the first 20 mins of urban driving. The other day I was driving 80mph on a 50 mile motorway drive and the Oil temp went up to 130 - 135 degrees.
Is this normal??????.
My brother-in-law has a W reg (2000) 1.8 non vvc and says his dial never goes above 80 degrees.

If this is a problem what can I do about it?

Is this a dial problem being that on some sites people have said that the 2000+ MGF models are 30 degrees out????. If thats the case how can I fix this.

Thanks for your help.

Andy,

Have a search of the archives. I do remember there being a problem with oil tempeature senders on Fs of around your vintage. If I remember correctly the fix was some resistor or something to bring the gauge reading back into line. I don't think you need worry that the temp is actually that high.

A search on 'oil temperature resistor' does the trick and sure enough Dieter has the answer at:

Dave, I have a car of this exact vintage. ie- the very first of the MY2000 built in 99. I find that im often over 130c at not particularly high speeds, and a bit worse when pushing on. However it is hot in HK!

May I ask a few questions?

1. What if the oil temperature is actually very high. Am I not just covering up the problem?

2.How does the resistor fix this. Is the readout now inaccurate due to the resistor aswell?

3.What has caused this problem in the first place?

4.Could there be another cause?

Thanks kindly

Paddy
Only MY2000 in HK

The oil temp gauge on my 2000 MGF 1.8i seems to read almost exactly as yours. It will rise to around 120 over that first gentle under-3000rpm, 6-8 miles period and can stay there for a period. Once at a steady 70mph it goes up to 130 ish and will stay there all day long on a fast run.
Have had my car for over 5 years (not the every day car exactly) now going from 13K-26K in that time with no problems. Agreed gauges will vary, but have seen similar temperatures reported on these threads before. Oils are normally fine up to 150 deg.
Enjoy!
