MG MGF Technical - Oil/water cooler

I know the Trophy and the TF160 have it. But was it fitted to any other TF variants i.e. the TF 135?
Steve Ratledge

The TF120 has an oil cooler for the gear box oil.
Neil Courtney

Trophy doesn't have it!!
Blue Pocket Rocket

The 135 and 115 doesn’t.
C Tideswell

Conclusion, *only* the TF160 has it.
;)
Dieter

Hmmm, what about the mg zr 160 ?
Steve Ratledge

Only TF160 has it, as Dieter says.

I am not sure about the ZR160 Steve... Check on the EPC?
Rob Bell

PBC000140 is unique at the TF160.
Not sure about the aircon oilcooler though.

The L series was/is with the other water-oil cooler.
Dieter

Thanks chaps - I don't have an EPC - I use Dieters brilliant on line version, but its MGF/TF only.
Steve Ratledge

If you're after something similar, then have a look at this:

http://www.qednet.demon.co.uk/rk/oilcool.htm

Looks to be a very tidy install.
Kris

Well, I've been interested in this oil/water cooler, and I've emailed them.

They told me there are some MGF owners that have installed yet.

Looks quite easy to fit, and maybe a good solution (not the best, of course), but clearly easiest to install than others.

Summer in Spain is hot, and is aproaching yet...

This looks like a good alternative to the TF160 item and probably priced similar.I would maybe use a slightly larger unit as this would allow for further tuning capacity
Check out laminova web site for more choice, interesting concept on intercoolers as well.
Also agents in Uk are Think automotive , very helpful.
mike

Yes, I think the same, the exchanger looks little. The laminova look clearly more powerful, but the QED (Quod Eram Demostrandum????) comes in a specific kit for K series engines, so no need of DIY engineering...

The price they gave me is £ 195 plus vat plus carriage (£264.38, including VAT and TNT carriage (traceable) to Spain)

I'm seriously considering this option, although I don't really know if it's cheap or expensive, but in summer, oil temperature raises up to 150 ºC very very easily, so I have to do something...

Any other opinion?
Spinder00

yes, check accuracy of temp gauge as sailing close to the edge means slight errors in reading can have significant implications. Oil efficiency is ideal if kept in a narrow band so when looking to cool oil you always run a risk of overcooling. Modern oils cope with this perfectly well, but not having to cope is better. Hence oil/water heat exchangers are essentially using the coolant thermostat to regulate temps, something you don't get with oil/air exchangers when an additional stat would be needed to provide this.

Interesting. My MY2000 Steptronic with A/C has a Gearbox Air/oil cooler and the A/C cooler leaving no space for an engine oil air/oil cooler.
I have suffered 150+ temps particularly pulling up thru the Swiss Alps in the summer.
Has anbody retrofitted the 160 water/oil intercooler to an MGF ?? If so, what was the cost and how effective was it.

Geoff, Tech-speed fitted the TF160 cooler to my '98 VVC some while ago, after the car began to reach 150 temps when pushed hard on track. I can't separate out the cost for you as it was part of other work and some time ago, but I can report that it is effective. I now see no more than 130 degrees under similar conditions. The bonus is also a quicker oil warm up than previously. There was one complication to the retrofit. The wiring to the oil temp sender differed between the TF160 and my '98 VVC and Tech-speed had to source a different temp sender that would fit the '9 wiring. Tech-speed recently did the same retrofit on Stu Dicken's VVC and so they will probably be able to quote you a cost and provide more details on the sender wiring issue.

Geoff, I priced the parts up at my local dealer before the collapse, can't remember an exact figure but it was near enough to £500! (inc. vat) + fitting, but that included every detail right down to some screws. Sure one of the specialists could do it cheaper.

Thanks Dave and Roy.

I had TechSpeed do a Head gasket upgrade for me last year and am putting together a work package for next month. The 160 intercooler and the B&G level alarm will top the list.

Geoff, would be interesting to know the cost, I'm still very interested in the cooler, but not at £5-600!
