MG MGF Technical - OT: Skoda engine maintenance

Appologies for the off-topic thread but I'm hoping one of the techies on here might be able to help! My girlfriend's 1.3 Skoda Felicia Classic (W-plate - 2000) is due for a 6 year service and there's no mention in the service book of changing the cambelt. Does anyone know if the 1.3 engine in these things has a cambelt or is it a good ol' fashioned timing chain?

It's probably a VW Golf engine, so that would be a good place to start.
More than likely to be a timing belt affair ( cheaper to make)

I might be totally wrong here but what I know from a friend who has a Skoda Pick-Up the smallest engine is Skodas own design that uses the old push-rod concept = no chain or belt = "safe engine" . Next engine size up is the old 8-valve VW Golf (Rabbit) -type of engine that has a belt BUT also is a safe engine. If the belt snaps nothing else happends than the engine stops. Next engine up from that one starts to get more difficult (16valve) with tight service intervals due to non-safe engine.
But this of course varies from model year and market to market...

Thanks, guys. I did have a quick look under the bonnet the other day and, in amongst the vast empty space, there was an engine with Skoda stamped on the top of it - don't know if that means it's a Skoda engine or if they just rebadged a VW lump! I didn't look in depth because it was cold, dark and wet but I'll have a proper look tonight with a torch. Any idea if I'll be able to tell by looking?

If it's a good old push rod jobby by taking the 'rocker box' off you will see NO cam shaft just a 'rocker shaft' with push rods coming up from the sump area and seating under the push end of the valve rocker.

I'm familiar with pushrod engines (have an MGB as well) but the rocker cover on nice old engines is quite clearly a rocker cover. On this Skoda thing it's flatter than I would expect - but that could just be design! Didn't really want to start taking bits off just yet but guess I might have to! :)

Hi Tim,

the Skoda 1300 has, as you aptly put it, a good ol' fashioned timing chain!

so nothing to worry about in terms of failure, but it might get a bit rattly as time goes on..

Really ?? The 1300 in the Felicia over here was pushrod only.But there was an option for a VW 8-valve with belt for slightly more money.

if the oil filler cap is on top of the rocker cover remove shine a light and you will see if its a rocker or overhead.

Thanks, guys. Already asked on Briskoda, thanks Paul - but a better response on here! Sounds like it should be a chain (that'll save a few quid on the service, never a bad thing). Great idea about the oil filler cap Graham, will check at the weekend.
