MG MGF Technical - Out of interest question

Sorry another one!!!.

The old girl had her MOT yesterday.....

Jumps back in car after MOT was finished and no power steering and PAS warning light on!!.

Switched off engine, re-started and all ok!!.

Looking in the owners manual on the section about the power steering light it says, and I quote " The light will illuminate if high engine speeds are maintained for more than 30 seconds while the car is stationary".

I put this down to the revs being kept up for the emmisions test, but whats the idea of the warning?, and why is it linked to the PAS??.

Ps

Passed first time with NO advises!. :o))))

Yep, bang on the head.

The PAS is set up to provide more assistance when the car is moving slowly, cutting out compleatly at 30ish and becomming a dead weight over that.
The engine must be running to stop the PAS using the battery up when the engine is still.
So the PAS looks at the speed and the engine revs, sees the revs are high for a while and thinks - oh dear I've lost the speed sensor, I better switch off so my driver doesn't suddenly find themselves stearing off the road for no effort.

EPAS is linked to, and varies with, road speed i.e. it cancels at a certain speed (60 ish?). So it needs to check road/engine speed from time to time.

Thanks Will!.

Thats cleared that one up then!!! :o)

You will see the same effect if your speedo dies i.e. the cable breaks - 30 seconds later the PAS shuts down and the warning light comes on. Repair the cable, and move the car, and everything comes back up.

Exactly as Tony says - been through that particular process twice now in 10 years...
