MG MGF Technical - Overheating AGAIN!!!

I was driving into London the other day, and of course got stuck in the ususal jam!

On looking down I noticed that it was overheating...once again!!!

The fan wasnt coming on!
of course when i had a chance to move at any sort of speed the needle zoomed down to a reasonable level.

I have changed the sensor in the head 3 times now!

Is there a dodgy batch of these?
Can the MEMS blow them?
could it be the fan not working properly/intermitently?
Is this a common problem and what is usally the problem/solution?

Anyhow despite all this the coolant level did not go down! so HGF has been avoided!!!!
Neil

Might not necessarly be the ECU temp sensor.

Is this an intermittent problem Neil?

Might point to a couple of potential faults.

Most likely is a poor electrical contact with the sensor. If the loom connector block is dirty/corroded/damaged then the resistance would be high, 'fooling' the MEMS to thinking that the engine is still cold. Inspect, clean and maybe even replace.

Another problem area is the fan or its fuse. Check for normal operation and that the fuse guarding this circuit is in good condition.

hmmm well I guess that i will get in there and stick a piece of wire into the terminals to see if the fan comes on!

I presume you mean the clipped on plug thingy that slides onto the brown sensor thingy! next to the head

whislt i am in there i will do the cam belt which involves gettign a tool to hold the cams from turning it slides between the cam wheels.

Would you suggest a supplier for these things

>>I presume you mean the clipped on plug thingy that slides onto the brown sensor thingy! next to the head<<

Yep, that's the one!

Regarding the tool that holds the two cam wheels together, this can be ordered from your MG dealer - but I am not sure that there maybe cheaper places to buy it (Piper perhaps, or may be even Brown and Gammons???)
Rob Bell

Yes you see !!

technology holds no surprises for me
Neil

Rob, Hynes call it a 'fabricated tool', you might find that your local garage can knock you up one (does it need much strength?
Will Munns

No, I don't think it needs much strength at all Will - it just needs to chock the two cam sprokets together to prevent the cam timing going 'screwy' after removing the cam belt.

www.draper.co.uk, cat# 52306
Generic cam lock tool for Rover K16 engines, about 3 quid.
