MG MGF Technical - paint loss under sills

Hi y'all,

Washing, polishing and glossing the F this weekend (looks excellent now), I noticed that about 1 square inch of paint *and* primer has chipped off both sills.

It's at exactly the same spot on both sides - on those flanges that run along the sides of the car at the lowest part of the sills - they run front-to-back, but at one point they deviate diagonally for about one inch, and it's at that spot that the paint's come off.

It's all very strange, because one is the original sill and the other side is one fitted about a year ago after I crunched the car. So it's not as if one bloke failed to paint them properly. :O

Anyway, do you think it'd be possible for me to repair it myself? The location on the car means that a perfect cosmetic result is not necessary. What do I do? Rub down the *few* spots of rust, prime, paint and then laquer? Or is there more to it thatn that?

All advice gratefully received.

Could it be the spot where the jack fits?

I promed the rust on mine with some rust converter and then used smooth black Hammerite paint.

>>>Could it be the spot where the jack fits?

That had crossed my mind. Never had the car up on the jack myself since new, and I'd hope that Mantles and B&G'd know how to lift an F without knackering the paint.

Thanks for the comment, Mike!

This is just behind the jacking point and I've noticed the same thing on both sides of mine. I can only think that because of the angle the paint didn't spray on properly in the first place or that it's more prone to road wear ( a bit like the stone chips around the air intakes which are just above this area) - I've dabbed on a nice thick coat of black Hammerite which seems to have done the trick.

I too think it is caused by stone chips, the angle would put it in the line of fire so to speak, I have the same problem and have painted over twice so far, even fitting mud flaps did not solve the problem.

I agree a coat of hammerite or thick under seal should protect it but it will be a continuous job as this will eventually be chipped away, just keep an eye on it and repair when necessary.

Chris

I've had mudflaps since the car was new - it's done 26K. I have to admit, I don't always clean that area of the car too thoroughly, so I'm glad I spotted it!

Noticed that this area of the sill on my car gets pummelled - especially since using wider tyres on the front wheels (most recently, 215s on my 16" rims).

I suspect that this is some kind of wheel 'protrusion' issue - and one that doesn't, curiously, seem to be solved by the use of mud flaps...

After reading this post I have noticed the same thing on my 96F so hammerite it is, luckly it is not very bad.
J Price

Yeah, but yours is 'not bad' after 7 years. Mine is a bit crap after 2!!
