MG MGF Technical - Passenger side carpet soaking wet

Just noticed that the passenger side carpet in my MGF is soaking wet. Pulling back the carpet it would seem to be the whole footwell on the car.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? If so where are the common places where this leak develops. I don't think it is the heater matrix, as the car does not topping up eith coolant regularly and in fact has not needed any topping up since the last bleed of the whole coolant system around 12 months ago.

Anyone have any thoughts on this, they would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely it is coming in past the heater's air box in the bulkhead - the original seals often weren't seated properly in the factory, or subsequently shrink... they were re-specified a couple of times and finally fixed for the TF.

Drop the glove box and see what you can do with some automotive silicone sealant - more here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/water_leaks/wet_passenger_side_carpet.htm

Hope this helps

Steve,

Could also be leaking between the window and the seal beside the door mirror.

I have this problem on the driver's side.

Good luck!

I had the same problem cured it with silicon sealent around the heater air intake in bonnet compartment. It runs down where your feet go. If you take out the carpet and put water in and around the intake, as if it was raining, you will then see it run down. There is a expanation on here somewhere if you do a search, but I cannot remember who put it on.

If you have air con, take off the wee rubber drain pipe that dissapears through the floor above the pasenger's feet (a couple of inches long with a 90 deg bend and an elephant trunk section in it) just pull it up through the floor, fits like a grommet, flush it through with clean water squeezing and manipulating it as you do so until all the crap that is currently blocking it has been removed. Re-fit and enjoy....

We also 'circumised' the exit aperture to hopefuly prevent the crap building up in future.

We had this problem in France last year and appealed for help on this site. Someone gave me this advice, I got busy with other stuff and left it, it's not usually hot / humid enough for this to be a problem in the UK but back we went to France a few weeks ago and it happened again. Sorted it in fifteen minutes, carpets took a little longer to dry out but all is now well.

My apologies to the guy who gave me the advice for not thanking him earlier, had a quick look through the BBS but couldn't find my original thread.

Damp carpets? You need 'cress seeds'! ;-) (Sorry - not helpful!)

Hi, it is a common problem that water runs down the passenger side door and ends up in the footwell. I tried testing mine with a bucket of water but it seems you need rain hitting the car at a particular angle to see the problem. Sorry not much help but you will see where it comes in if you drive round in the rain with someone in the passenger seat looking for drips while you concetrate on the driving :)
