MG MGF Technical - Petrol Smell

I picked up a Y reg (2001) Trophy a couple of weeks ago. It's been serviced and is in great nick, except for an intermittent petrol smell.

When the car is either just sitting, or being driven sensibly, there is no smell regardless of how full the tank is so I'm pretty sure that it's not the tank that's the problem. However, I do get a smell if I drive it like a lunatic!!

Has anyone come across this type of thing before? I'd like to get it fixed but don't fancy having a mechanic scratching his head for hours trying to work it out while the clock keeps ticking!

I've been to the local MG Rover specialists in Edinburgh and they couldn't be sure, although they didn't actually look at it, we only discussed the problem. At £55 per hour I thought I'd do a bit more research myself first. They did say that petrol smells were common in early MGF's because of faulty fuel tanks but they say that that problem had been sorted by 2001.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Your symptoms are not the early MGF fuel smell problem, which was only apparent after parking overnight not during driving.
Search the archive because I'm sure someone posted recently having symptoms like yours.

Thanks for that. I'll have a look around later today.

I've had a good rummage but can't find anything that matches my symptoms. Would a faulty breather be a good guess? If so, is that likely to be an expensive fix?

Thanks.

Hi all I have the same smell as described above. Once the car has been driven for say 20 miles the smell gets worse. I have been told it could be the tank? I have also tried undoing the fuel cap and placing it back after releasing the fume pressure. To my surprise the smell went away..... further investigation required. Oh by the way mines a 2004 160 with tweeks.
