MG MGF Technical - Porous Hood- Advice required please.

Can anyone confirm that MGF Hoods are slightly porous but can be treated to prevent water seeping through. My MGF hood was fitted at the begining of the year (in a time when rain was few and far between) but over the last couple of months i've had soaked seats after the car has sat in a heavy downpour. In normal rain the roof is tightly water proof, doesn't even come through the glass seals but when we've had the really heavy storms with heavy rain (or even hail last month) I end up with rain coming through the fabric of the hood and dripping onto the seats. Has anyone else found this and is there a cure. Fed up of taking another car to work in the mornings when I have a perfectly good F to drive. Thanks.

Steve,

Renovo do a hood treatment which can improve the water repellant properties of the hood. I've heard several people with a similar problem - not a fault as such, there's just only so much the hood can take.

I imagine it's mainly a problem when the cars parked outside for a long period during heavy rain. You could do worse than to buy one of the many different hood covers from the likes of Mike Satur, Moss or MGR. These are all water resistant so should dramatically reduce the problem.

Hope this helps,
Steve

Thanks, i'll have a look around for something then if they're available. I have a hood cover and a full waterproof cover for it but with the weather forecasters being as accurate as ever it's not always possible to put them on or you even get caught out on a supposed dry sunny day. Thanks again.

I bought a really good hood cover on ebay, double sided so good for rain or shine. It clamps under the wheel arches so the wind can't whisk it off. It wasn't cheap but well worth the money. I use it everyday, when I get to work it goes on and overnight at home as I am garageless at the moment.
Keep an eye on ebay as they do crop up every now and then.
I will however be putting my hardtop on the minute winter sets in!

Good Luck.

Go to Halfords and buy a tin of Fabsil tent proofer for £5.
Does exactly what it says on the tin.

I have had mine for 6 years & it sits out side in all weathers and the roof has never leaked. Water proof the hood and all should be well.

Small drips around the seals are however, an other matter!

>Fitted at the beginning of the year<
Who supplied it ?? It should still be waterproof. There needs to be deterioration over several years before it requires to be retreated.

Fabsil does it for me. Once I year I wash the hood, allow it to dry and apply Fabsil with a paint brush. Stinks a bit tho'

(Slightly off topic, sorry)
I've now got a MS sunmate and storm cover. (both 2nd hand, what a cheap scate) Can they be fitted when the hood is already wet, or does this encourage mould etc?

Scate = skate

I'd be back at the suppliers asking questions myself. My 7 year old F has the original hood, never treated with anything and still it's waterproof.
