MG MGF Technical - power steering light on

Hi just found this site and it proving really helpful.
Can you help with this problem. I was driving with no problems pulled up to unlock my drive gates turned the car back on and the power steering warning light was on and no power steering.
Could this be a serious fault and if so can you give me some idea of how much a garage would charge to fix the problem?
And any garages near to me in essex that can do it.
thanks chris wood.

This is not really a fault, although some garages might tell you it is. It happens if the tickover is a bit high and you leave the engine idling for a few minutes.

To correct it, turn off the ignition then restart the engine, when you should find the power steering returns. Be prepared for it happening at traffic lights as well.

Chris you should join up and search the archives, they're a mine of information. As Chris says EPAS will switch off ("failsafe mode") if it reads high revs over 30 secs (IIRC) without corresponding road speed. In my case EPAS failed at 60 mph on the M4 when the wife was driving, which she was unamused about! Turned out to be a faulty connection so check the EPAS fuse etc (am sure someone will be along with chapter and verse on the wiring diagram).

Once again this board has made me so happy...Took your advice Will and searched the archives and went to my car pulled the big fuse out and replaced it under the bonnet and everything is now fine.
Just think ive been driving round like this for nearly 8 months all for a fuse!
And there i was thinking it was gonna cost me an arm and a leg!!! lol.
superb!!!!!!

Good news - glad to be of service (and in some small way repay all the excellent tips I've had from this BBS) :-)

Whilst this has cured your problem Chris, a similar situation occurs when the speedo cable breaks. The engine revs are again much higher than the relative road speed, so 30 seconds after you loose the speedo, the PAS cuts out as a safety measure.

Just thought I'd add this, since the symptoms can look the same.
