MG MGF Technical - Pulsing interior/exterior lights

Hi guys n gals

I have just picked my car up from Techspeed after a "few changes!" with a little help from Mike Satur..

Firstly a big thanks to both of them... They both pulled all the stops out and I now have my car back for Silverstone..

But i appear to have a small problem...I was just about to leave Techspeed this afternoon and noticed the alternator light was flickering on...They disconnected it cleaned the terms and reconnected it and all seemed well....

No problems on the way home... but when pulled up and removed by foot from the accelerator completely, I noticed that all the dashboard lights and exterior lights were pulsing quite deeply.. seems to be going in time with the engine...

Is this a case of its defo the alternator or has anyone got any ideas... I will call Techspeed Monday but would like to get to the bottom of it earlier if possible

Stu, bad contacts somewhere probably, or an earth problem, check the battery terminals are tight.

I find that, after a fast blast on the bike, lights and sounds seem enhanced. An hours rest and a stiff drink and all gets back to normal.

Give it a try and rest until Monday. It will still be there but you'll feel better.

p.s. glad the car is back on the road again. You dissapeared from the bbs for a while - presumably away working again. May need a day off sick by the 6th and a trip to Silverstone could make me better again.

Hi Mike / John

Batteries a good idea ..will check that in the morning....

I can't think of what else would cause it.

Hope its not the alternator... I've just spent 3K on the car !!

John, ref my absence.. long story, family bereavement and busy at work... Will fill you in over our next beer !!

Checked all the connections all seem fine..

But definately sounds like a belt is overtight or something like that...

I investigated the pulsing of the lights this afternoon.(was dark enough with those black clouds)

First I thought it only does it when the engine is idleing but it actually does it all the time even when on motorway..

All the dashboard lights are pulsating from bright to dim cyling about two to three times a second..The exterior ones do it also...

Apart from a defunked alternator I'm at a loss to know what the problem is...

Any more thoughts.........

Might be worth puting a multimeter on the Battery and checking to see if the voltage regulator is u/s.
Get somebody to rev the engine with the multimeter attached and see if the Regulator is doing it's job...

Hi guys..

I changed the alternator yesterday and the problems gone, Yippee !!!!

Its also completely cured my 'hunting' problem at tick over when the engines is warm, so the voltage irregularity was obviously effecting the MEMS ECU too....

Have a peaceful and relaxing Easter all..

Phew! Glad to hear that Stu. Another story to add to the archives - well done.

Maybe you could offer the old alternator to SF to power his under car floods?

"An hours rest and a stiff drink and all gets back to normal."

Or maybe a stiff rest and an hour's drinking? ;-)
Cannonball Bob

Bob, you are, of course, much younger than me so your way may work. However, at my age my way is easier!!
JohnP

Good result there Stu! :o)
