MG MGF Technical - Radiator fan ON constantly

Re 1997 MGF Radiator cooling fan is on all the time when engine running even from cold. Disconnected temperature sensor but made no difference. Relay ok (not stuck on). All fuses ok I suspect permanent earth path through e.c.u which should not always happen, therefore faulty e.c.u. Anyone had this, any advice? Pete

this is a faulty temp sensor or faulty temp sensor cabling. The ECU notices that the sensor has failed and defaults to assuming that the rad needs extra cooling (safe) and runs the engine rich (you might notice a high idle).

Try swapping in a new sensor

Had the same thing on my 97 VVC, try cleaning up the brown connector and socket above the exhaust manifold, I cannot guarante this will work for you but it was the cause of my cars fan staying on, that was 3 years ago and all is still OK!

Thanks boys. Replaced temp sensor but theres no difference. Would a new E.C.U. have to be programmed?
pete

Is the connector to the ecu clean? I would try spraying 'electrical contact cleaner' on the ecu connector and check the wiring continuity from the sensor before you start talking big bucks with new ecus.

if unsure get an auto electrician to test it out. Garages are scared of that black box of tricks, but the number of failed ECU's we see here is in the one every two or so years - and they are bloody expensive to replace "just in case"
Will Munns

Thanks everyone. Cleaned all connectors and checked continuity but just the same, also there seems to be a lot of engine fumes. I will start saving up!

If they're fairly reliable what about a second hand one?
Leigh

yep, they are, so don't buy a new one.

On one hand there are speciallists out there who could analyse the failure and repair an ECU.
Not FOC of course but cheaper then a new one.
This compny is said to be one of severla? in the UK:

(The BBS archives know some more)

On the other hand it should be quite easy to source the right ECU for your car from a breaker.
You even could save the visit to an ex-dealer with Testbook to adapt the engine ECU to the immobilizer ECU, if you source and change the whole system from one other car, including.
- the Engine ECU
- the Alarm ECU
- and the related 2 of the alarm blippers
See my instructions on the part numbers (related to your cars VIN) at the below link.
