MG MGF Technical - Re-fueling

I am relatively new to the MGF. Could someone please let me now the best way to fill the car with petrol. It takes ages dribbling out the end of the nozzle as the pump keeps swithching off. I have tried turning the nozzle to the right to the left, right in, slighty in. nothing seems to work. Please help.
Tris

Hi Tris, welwome to the evil world of the MGF.

As you've probably guessed, this is a "feature" of the F that even gets a mention in the Owners Handbook.

Normal action is (as you tried) just in a bit, in all the way, twist left, twist right, fully on, on a bit etc.

I've got used to it and don't have a problem as long as I use pump 9 at Safeway.

Others have noted that the fuel pipe twixt filler and tank can be twisted slightly. Details are available somewhere on this BBS but I cannot locate right now.

You are showing as 'non member'; if you haven't registered yet then do so (no charge) and search the archive and you will soon find "more than one" reference.

Have you tried completly upside down(the pump handle, not the car)?
Will Munns

Good thought Will - Tris has already tried the in, out, shake it all about routine in case you feel like wheeling that one out again:-)
JohnP

yep had this one too, my solution was to just take my time and allow the repmobile drivers to look at my car:):)

> long as I use pump 9 at Safeway
Is there a large sainsburys in Jersey, I don't remember one in "Bergerac".

Is any pump 9 at any Safeways good for this?

I saw a Marks & Spencer in Jersey a couple of years ago, don't remember Sainsbury or Halfords but who knows ...
JohnP

Damn, I had the music for "Bergerac" running round my head, it was annoying, but it has been replaced by the music to "allo allo"!

>> pump 9

good pump,
the one with the those nice paper hand towels.

I used to have this problem, but had my pie-neck coller thingy (stand back in awe) was changed by the garage as it was distorted and I can now fill up using ANY pump in Sainsburys.

Was it worth the cost of changing the part ? Probably not.

Cheers

Jeff, I've only been on BBS for a year but, even so, that is the first time I've seen it given a proper name.

Just searched the workshop manual electronically and "pie-neck coller thingy" not found so that's something else MGR have missed out.

Hi Tris,

"it is not a bug, it is a feature" that is what we are saying in Siemens when our customers (e.g MG Rover) are complaining about the Engine Control System...

Learn to live with it and take your time looking at your beautyful MGF while filling her up...

Thanks Guys

I will try upside down, but short of that I will just have to take my time and enjoy the beauty. JohnP there is no Halfords or Sainsbury here, The States will not let companies likethis in as it destroys the monopolies, the local companies have. We do have nice women and beaches though.

dont put the nozzel all the way in. There are small tabs on the underside of the nozzel but i cant remember which one is ment to rest at the edge of the tank. I remember reading it in the handbook as i had this problem when i first go the mgf
gee

Tris, cannot really comment on the women as I visited with my wife but agree on beaches or, especially, the wildness of the north coast line in an arc Saint Ouen to Trinity.

Crap map @work at present but you will know where I mean.
JohnP

Holding the nozzle almost upside down, with the hose leaving the filler nozzle at 1 o'clock position always works for me.

Just be careful not to spray fuel all over your paintwork as you invert the nozzle!!

The advice in the manual is to just pop the FIRST little lug on the nozzle over the lip of the filler tube. This works in most F's, inclusing mine.

A few F's did come out of the factory with twisted filler tubes, but a dealer should be able to correct this.

Another thing is to try a BP/shell/texaco sort of station instead of a supermarket one, as supermarket pumps often have higher flow rates and so cut off more easily.

Japanese imported Fs have a larger filler hole than British ones. There is no reduction in the size of the pipe to ensure you don't use leaded fuel. But the problem still occurs with these and I find that the best method is to put the nozzle only in an inch or so and direct the flow downwards and slightly forwards.

In the British version I am sure that if you don't push the nozzle in far enough it will not open the flap at the bottom of the reduced filler neck which could cause major problem in filling. Or am I incorrect in assuming there is a flap at the bottom of the filler neck?

>Or am I incorrect in assuming there is a flap at the bottom of the filler neck?

There is of course one flap on top... and I said already several times... a second *none return valve flap* is located at the end of the filler pipe. This one is PRONE TO STICK ;)
As well the second blockage was already mentioned. The connection hose between filler hose end and plastic tank inlet pipe is well known to bee *crumpled*.

Worth getting it sorted instead of having funny acrobatic actions at filling stations.

On both my F's I've found the best way is:
1. Put nozzle in normally only as far as the first notches on underside of pmp nozzle.
2. Turn nozzle upside down so that handle is at approx. 11 o'clock position.
3. DO NOT let rip with the nozzle trigger unless you want to spray petrol all over the place when your tanks full.

I use only shell optimax and don't have any problems filling up, maybe they pump slower for this. In truth my wife does, but if you treat the nozzle nice and only just put it in. squeeze gently and it seems to be fine. Although I have sprayed fuel all over me and the floor in the past. It just adds character to the car. and petrol smells nice too !
simon

this is funny.

all this talk about nozzles and the fact that your wife punps slower.

we got our first F last week and had the inevitable fun of petrol on the floor when we tried to fill the car up for the first time. and petrol does smell nice, just not in its 'spread out' form all over the floor.

I had the same problem and solved it by taking the 2nd non return valve thingy out.

Can fill at the max rate now.

Car smells slightly petrol if I corner hard right with a full tank (quality rover design or do other cars need one way valves to stop this sort thing?)

Just traded in for a Tuscan S. am I a gutton for British punishment or what..
