MG MGF Technical - Rear brake discs...

Hi folks,

I need to source a pair of new rear brake discs in the next day or so to be delivered to Marshalls MGR in cambridge (yes as many said, this should finally solve the wheel noise problem!)..

I've tried B&G (quoting me £37.50 a pair + vat) but they have none in stock...

Does anyone know of any more places that could deliver possibly in the same/next day? I've also tried the local tyre/brake place and laughed when they said £127 a pair which is about what MGR were going to try and charge me...

Cheers

Hi Chris,

No idea if stock is available, but the best price (apart from B&G) I found for standard discs was
https://sslrelay.com/buypartsby.co.uk/pads_details.php?recordID=5198

Not sure that link is going to work... www.buypartsby.co.uk is the site.

Let me know if you have success, after munching the standard pads at Silverstone I'm fearing my discs are going to need replacing too, especially since I'm hoping to put Mintex on both ends...

Let's hope this sorts the noises you've been plagued with!

Chris

try a couple of these guys from yell

http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?keywords=motor+spares&companyName=&location=Cambridge%2C+Cambridgeshire&searchType=classic&broaderLocation=&clarifyIndex=0&ooa=

or

http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?keywords=motor+factors&companyName=&location=Cambridge%2C+Cambridgeshire&searchType=classic&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0

possibly some duplicates.

I know we all laugh at them but Halfords sell brake disks and the F are not that uncommon.

Could give Mike Satur a try - http://www.mikesatur.co.uk/fx07.html

Quotes £30 for his standard discs, though not actually sure if that's each or the pair. Isn't this an excuse to upgrade, though? :-)

Chris try Moss, £80 a pair but decent quality. I bought some cheap disks, small cracks appeared after about six months so I replaced them. No problem with the Moss disks.

Chris,

what was found to be the actual problem with the rear discs? (I'm assuming you mean disc rotors not pads)

It must be pretty drastic to have them replaced and not just machined?

Cheers,
Branko.

Branko

Branko,

I haven't actually seen the problem but the guy at MGR called yesterday and said possibly build up of rust or something - they replaced the one disc and the noise went away. I am actually going to ask to take the disc itself away so I look at it myself. I feel a little dubious b-s being pushed my way from them at the moment... as they are claiming they still think changing the bearing was a good idea as they still think that had a problem... seems like a trial and error approach to me and luckily my warranty company bore the brunt of that cost...

Ken and others - I'm afraid I'm possibly just after standard ones and not upgrades or specials as I fear the F might be being sold fairly soon :-( Just trying to decide whether to go straight for the S2000 now or a reliable stop-gap non-convertible to save some money until winter time when the S2000 will be a little cheaper...

Because of a slight oversight on MGR's behalf who had, as it turned out, actually already fitted "their" new discs to my car before getting letting me know (they had to to check the problem was solved)... I've ended up getting my disks from MGR for quite a reduced rate... otherwise they were going to be spending more time taking their new ones off and putting some more on... probably costing them more in labour than it would to charge me less for the disks... I also got a discount on the labour as well after bartering :-)

So... the car is now back with me again with no noise so far...

B&G couldn't get any standard discs for 2 weeks as their supplier's warehouse had a fire... nice..

Chris,

DON"T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep her as she will serve you well.

I saw a s2000 the other day outside my work and although it did look nice, It just did not have the aura and the style and character of the MGF.
MGF winds hands down.

There is something special about the experience you get in just driving a MGF that is unique.

Maybe you could have the s2000 as a "spare" ?? LOL

Cheers,
Branko.

Hopefully you are now sorted! Just had my letter from Marshall about the fact that they will honor my existing MGR warranty but you HAVE to have all servicing done by THEM to keep it in force - your experiences with Cambridge don't give me much confidence! We have used St Neots and Huntingdon in the past but they are now closed so Bedford is my nearest. My mates ZR was there yesterday overnight and they got their windscreen smashed and CD nicked - wonderfull!
