MG MGF Technical - Rear Engine Cover

Hi all.

Related to the work performed on my VVC head (see VVC Cambolt Saga thread), I just had a mad idea:

Above the rear engine cover I separated the carpet from the sounddeadning material. They're glued together.
Then I only installed the carpet and discard the rest.

With this job I got more room at the back (5cm in depth), I shaved at least 6 kg (it's not a race car, I know...) and the noise is not that loudier. Of course the K&N is now more audible, but I like it!

The triming was not perfect afterwards, but I solved this with velcro bits gled to the internal body of the car.

As anyone ever tried this before?

Hi Valter, "noise is not that louder" - presume with hood down but much louder with hood up?

The sounddeadning material also reduces the heat getting from the engine bay in to the cabin.

In Lisbon I don't think heat is a problem, remmebering how to put the hood up might be :-)

Did what you described + took away the same very heavy material behind the seats some time ago. Replaced with much lighter material as used in isolating engines in boats etc. This material also has a thin alu foil on one side acting as a heatshield.
In this way the height for the covers were restored to original. / Carl

Heat is in fact now a problem in Lisbon.

It is impossible to drive the car between 11am till 5pm with hood down. Too hot!!! Good thing is that all MGF's in Portugal have Air Con as a standard feature. Not most, but ALL!

But you can drive it top down all night long with no problems.

Funny how tastes differ... I did the exact opposite and added sound deadening material behind the seats and under the carpets. Car is now much more refined and silent from inside the cabin...

Fuel tank is in it's own enclosure, below the parcel shelf, sandwiched between the engine bay and the cabin.

Removing or substituting the sound deadening material on the parcel shelf and / or the rear panel will not affect the temperature of the fuel tank - the side that needs protecting faces away from the cabin and the material is above and on the other side to the potentially 'hot face'.
