MG MGF Technical - Rear Hydragas

Please see my post in the MGF General section about a Hydragas Survey and add your comments.

Rear Hydragas units are N.L.A. and I betcha those with aging MGF's will need a source sometime soon. That could become a reality if we collectively encourage a manufacturer to commit to tooling; your feedback to the survey is important!

Keep the posts to the survey going! Thanks to those that have contributed.

How do I find your survey? I too have concerns, I had to fit a second hand hydragas unit.

It is a post in the MGF General Section. Please add your thoughts there.

How did MGR make them? Where is this tooling now? Is it possible to get them produced from the original tooling/manufacturer?
A L C Mackew

I believe the original manufacturer is "no more" and why new units cannot be found (unless there is some stock on a shelf someplace). Clearly a bad situation. The reason the survey has been posted (MGF General) is to collect MGF owner's feedback to help a potential manufacturer plot expected revenues against the costs of tooling and production.

What is required to modify a front unit to suit the rear? That may be a way to solve the problem in the stort term. Any ideas?

Surely the tooling itself still exists somewhere in the UK (maybe under a tarp somewhere at Longbridge)?
A L C Mackew

These were manufactured by a seperate company, nothing whatsoever to do with MGR. I believe they were made by Dunlop in the Birmingham area. The first thing a manufacturer would have to do would be to BUY the rights to manufacture units.
Not wishing to cause offense but I would be shocked if a company would take on this job.

These units have been used on a number of MGR vehicles. The units have a nitrogen bag/sphere inside and these have differing pressures inside, on top of this some units have damping internal to the unit, this means that some have SLIGHTLY different characteristics (not the end of the world really so long as a balanced pair are fitted)
On top of this the units have externally a "cone" shaped connection to the suspension, again the design of this cone changes, and that changes the rate of change of the suspension. Naturally these can be recovered from your own units and fitted to the replacements.

It ought not to be dfficult to use a pair of fronts on the rear, using the rear linkages and cones
