MG MGF Technical - Rear Tyres Scrubbing (outside edge)

Just quickie

Last month I had new GY F1's fitted to all four wheels and got the tracking sorted. Now Ive noticed that the outside edge of the rear tyres are scrubbing quite badly.

Any sugestions on what could be causing it?

>>and got the tracking sorted.<<
Did you get all 4 wheels tracked ?
And did you get a printout showing the values for toe-in/out, camber etc ?
Is you car lower than standard ?

All four wheels tracked (didnt get the print out) , cars not been lowered.

Any unusual wear on fronts ?
What pressures are set - and are you using an accurate gauge ?
Are these the usual MGF tyres sizes - I guess you're on 16inch rims ?
If there's no sign of the tyres rubbing on bodywork, then I'd still suspect the tracking - find somewhere else to verify the settings and get a printout. The tracking station should check the ride height on both sides with a rule - not just by sight.

Good luck on sorting it out - hopefully before you get serious wear on those new tyres.

Mark, the answer has to be tracking (I'm assuming that you've not been racing round tracks recently?)

Under inflated tyres will cause premature wear on both shoulders of the tyre.

You'd need the camber to be massively positive to get outer edge wear - to the extent that it'd be obvious to the naked eye. Only way you could get an MGF to go positive like this would be if you hit a curb sideways at 70mph and damaged the suspension... I think you'd remember that! ;o)

So that leaves tracking. Sounds like way too much toe-in at the rear.

If that does not prove to be the case, look into the alignment of the rear subframe (check the thrust angle).

Also, if there is too much play in the suspension allowing excessive passive rear-steer, then this could cause this problem, but it is relatively unlikely.

Time to get the tracking re-checked Mark.
