MG MGF Technical - Rear Window

Having been an owner for all of 3 weeks, somebody has kindly forced a metal spike through the rear window of my MGF, can anybody recommend anybody, to supply and fit a new one, in the East london, sth essex area. i have seen a few sites offering the stayfast rear window only for £219 approx but fitting look as though it may be a problem because of the rivets,

Many thanks
Paul

http://www.softtopwindows.co.uk (??com) are based in Croydon, pricing very good, DIY or drive to them. Their site shows full instructions but the saving by DIY is (IMHO) not worth it.

Thanks John, Great help. A day off in order to get over there now.

You could get a new window from MGF Centre for a good price it's an original not one of these replacement glued in jobs. Fitting really isn't too difficult 10 quid for a pop rivet gun will sort it. Or you can buy a whole roof for just a bit more than you've been quoted for a window. If you have a MK1 hood I would avise the latter option. It's far superior than the MK1.

PS Some little sod slashed my roof just last week, I'm doing the latter!

Ironically they didn't slash the rear window so I have a spare, I'm keeping it until I need it the next time.

Or you could buy one of Mike Satur's new roofs with a glass rear window and then it'll be a bit harder for some little f****r to stick a spike through it.

Tim, for my future reference as the frosty mornings haven't quite finished yet - any idea how much you are talking about when you recommend MGF Centre for a new window as I have not yet seen any prices quoted.

I know that softtopwindows charge £95 DIY and £145 Fitted and have already seen some exhorbitant prices quoted for MGR dealers.

I know when I got my car the dealer paid a Coach Trimmer to fit a window pre-sales so have no idea what he charged.

Living in Hertfordshire it is no easier to get to Croydon than Wolverhampton so total fitted price becomes relevant to me. If by post and then DIY then it is simply price.

Why do people do things like that!!! it really pi**es me off!

I wonder how good they would look with a spike through them or a slash!!

No wonder I don't feel sorry for them when something happens to them!!

Sorry just really do not like people like that.

Paul, hope the rear window gets sorted.

Tim good luck with the roof.

Had my F for two months now, the rear plastic screen was replaced at the time of purchase. Now the sun has been out I have had the roof down every day, but now I have noticed when the roof is up there are some very notiable creases in the plastic, which distorts the view when looking in the mirror.
Are these creases normal and will they go, am I doing anything wrong?

Also what is the general view on a tonneau, I bought a second hand one on Ebay, but it doesn't seem to fit properly along the back. Yesterday the wind got under it and blew it over. I am thinking of not bothering with it any more.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Yes, normal, sun will iron them out. If the window is cold then consider unzipping it as it will put less strain on the plastic.

The MK1 hood cover is tricky to get hooked into place, the wire should go under the lip of the hood. Most of us don't bother using it as it makes it easier to raise/lower the hood at short notice (like when approaching rounderbouts!

Thanks Will
I unzip it every time as I was told it could split.
On the hood cover there on poppers on the front, but no wire on the back end, the back just lays there.

There are two types, one has a wire 'bead' in the trainling edge, the other has a long flap which you trap in the boot hinge. The trick is trying to get the wire bead under the back of the hood, it's done by popping one side, then pulling as hard as possible on the cover as you feed it around the back of the hood, finally pulling the other end enough to reach the other popper. It's very hard to do this without it popping out, you won't think it will reach.

Cheryl,

I covered a piece of pipe insulation from B&Q with felt. I place it in the fold of the rear window when I put it down and it helps to stop it creasing and the two side rubbing together causing scratches.

I saw the pipe insulation tip just after I bought my F. I went to the local B&Q, couldn't find what I was looking for and asked a friendly young lady if she knew where I could get felt. I've not been allowed in the shop since so ...

I had a very large BRG bath towel that looked like it was made for the job. It now lives in the car with many uses. I won't bore you with all of them but it rolls up and sits in the fold of the rear window, it keeps bird droppings of the leather seats when parked with the top down, it soaks up the rain when parked with the top down, it soaks up the rain when parked with the top UP, it makes an elderley aunt look like the Queen Mother on a drive etc etc

I to was told to unzip the rear window before lowering the hood but still got a crease mark in it,but after reading this can it be lowered with the window in place it if so what do I do. And where do you put the rear screen if you do unzip it. (new owner)
Colin

Colin

Yes the top can be lowered with the screen still zipped in, just take care when bending the screen. Think of it as giving the screen a karate chop while pushing the hood towards the back of the car; the screen will tuck down into the hood well. Do not try this when it is cold or the hood is covered in frost etc.

When you unzip the screen and pull the velcro apart only the top and both sides are released, the bottom of the screen is still attached to the hood. Undo the hood clips at the windscreen to release tension. Undo the zip. Undo the velcro. Lay the screen flat in the hoodwell and attach the 2 press studs to the t-bar fittings. Lower the hood.

I cover the screen with a towel as I lower the hood; MS sells a screen protector that sits in the hoodwell and folds over the unzipped screen.

Hope it doesn't rain in the next 10 minutes.
