MG MGF Technical - Redex
Does anyone have any information or experience about using Redex additive to petrol, does it work? Is it worth it? Any disadvantages? Thanks John
John
Now that takes me back...... penny a shot! Ted BTW it didn't do much even back in the days when petrol was as about as good as parafin! T
Ted Newman
The original Redex was/is an upper cylinder lubricant. I think now there are many different Redex products for both petrol and diesel engines. Used neat you could pour it directly into cylinders after removing spark plugs then start up and cause a total smokescreen in the road as the engine was run burning the redex in the hope it would also do a top end overhaul and burn away excess carbon build up in old and sick engines.
Joe
I recommend Slick 50 fuel addative over and above both STP and Redex. Plus in Halfords at the moment you get £5 cash back. This stuff kept my ageing Renault 19 16V going until recently replaced with a MGF! So recommended!

Redex is bloody great- it gives an instant difference if your car has done over 30k miles. Engine revs more cleanly and quickly. I used it on 100k mile N reg fiesta and the difference was phenomenal. Just use it once and thats it for a year, is my recommendation.
Ian
Hi, <penny a shot!> Has it gone up then, Ted? Cheers, Kes.
Kes
Use Shell Optimax
Blue Pocket Rocket
I used Optimax in my MPI the only difference was to my wallet.
Ian
Filled up with Optimax during the week - haven't noticed any real difference, other than as Ian says to my wallet. I'll probably fill it up another couple of times to give the engine inners a clean.

The Redex bottle recommends 10ml/l of petrol. So, how do you measure the quantity of Redex to put into the tank? And then how do you get it into the tank, past the filler valve? Ralph
Ralph
Ralph I was going to give it a try. The measuring seemed within my limited abilities but your point about the valve stopped me by the short ones.
JohnP
Halfords sell Redex in a 99p bottle which is sufficient to treat one tank fullon petrol in an MGF. The filter valve poses no problems. When pouring the redex, press the bottle against the filter (this lifts it up) so it goes directly into the tank. Dont be afraid of having a go, these are not complicated cars.
Ian
So, Ted's 'penny a shot' has now become 'pound a shot'. That's inflation for you! Ralph
