MG MGF Technical - Results From Diagnostics Not Good!!

Right, my girlfriends 1996 MGF VVCi went in to the garage today to see what was wrong with it (see very rough running post). Oh my god, the question should be what's not wrong with it. Here's the list we got back:

Passanger side rear track control arm is bent!!!!
Play in passanger side rear bearing, hub and flange.
Play in one of the front bearings.
Headgasket leaking oil (this was changed about 18 months ago due to HGF).
The noise it's making seems to be coming from the cam belt tensioner but they are not sure.
Front disc's and pads have about 3000 miles left (bigger things to worry about at the moment).
Rear tyres have about 3mm left.

Apart from that the car is great (heavy sarcasm).

We have been quoted £581.56 to get the rear track control arm, rear hub, rear bearing and rear flange sorted.

Didn't want to ask how much to get all the other things sorted as well!!!

Is this a good price? Does anybody know where I can get these parts cheaper...............please help!!!

David

Like any car they need looking after and fixing.

The rear passenger side stuff looks like evidence of a little off road excursion perhaps?

Head gasket needs keeping an eye on the water levels. A little leaking oil is bearable but if you start to loose water or the oil is turning to brown mayonnaise you have ...you know what!

Neil

Worth speaking to Mike Satur in Sheffield for a comparative quote, you might find it's worth the petrol...

As Neil says, no immediate panic on the oil leak but should be closely monitored. The cam belt tensioner I believe is around £70, a bit fiddly to replace but not a lengthy process.

Front discs & pads are a doddle, you can earn some brownie points by doing them yourself maybe?

If the tensioner fails, then it is brown trouser time - see Don Kimberley's sorry tale here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/CoH/tensioner_failure.htm

The costs are going to be high for all this work - there is no two ways about it - but an independent will have lower labour rates, and will often complete the job faster. So as Mike says, definitely worth phoning around to get cheaper quotes on the work.

As stated on that earlier thread - don't drive the car until you are confident that the valve timing will not go disasterously wrong on you.
Rob Bell

The rear tracking arm is about £130+. The centre threaded adjuster is the weakest part that bends but is not spareable on its own. MGF Centre, Midland MGF or other sources may have a spare adjuster only.

The prices they quoted were:

Track arm £160.54
Bearing £46.23 (I've seen these for £19.99!!)
Hub £67
Flange £72

Not sure if these are expensive or not as I drive a Calibra Turbo where parts are ten a penny!!!
David

Geoff, the threaded section is available as a spare part at £15'ish, available from u know who;-)
