MG MGF Technical - Reversing Lights!!?

Hi Everyone, long time since I've been here!

My reversing lights stopped working the other night on my TF 160. I replaced the bulbs and still nothing, then I replaced the fuse and they worked! then last night they stopped again! I've replaced the fuse and still nothing!

Any ideas?

It's only the reversing lights that aren't working everything else as far as I know is ok.
Darran

check fuse amps .the guys will be along to help[ you out . darran i know from past that the log book you get is wrong rob bell pointed that out

Hi Darran,

Could be the switch on the gearbox, or a fracture in the wiring. There is a pair of connectors in the wiring that according to the manual should be in the vicinity of the distributor cap, but whether that'll be the same on your 160 engine I couldn't say. If you disconnect these and use a piece of wire to close the circuit, if the reversing lights come on then the switch is prime suspect.
Mike Hankin

Assuming the TF & F back end wiring is the same then that fuse can be taken out by a few other lights including the high level brake light which is fed via our old friend the boot lid wiring harness :-(

Worth checking to see if one or more of the wires has broken and is shorting - just where it bends on opening closing the boot.

I'm with John on this one.

there's plenty on the archives about boot wires breaking

Weekend just past I noticed if I opened the boot fully the reversing lights came on and the boot light went off. If i then moved it from fully open downward slightly the lights would go off and the boot light came on.

On sunday I opened the wiring and found 3 broken wires black, purple and I think a green. So I cut and stripped the wires and soldered in 3 joints and all back to normal

Cheers guys!! it's completely stopped working now and MOT on Sat!! arghh!! I'll have a look at the wires near the boot to see if they're damaged.

It's weird as when I get in the car for first time and check they work then after 2mins driving they don't!
Darran

There might be a loose/short at the gear box end. My plug has to be reconected after the mechanic left it of after replacing the clutch and with out a hoist or axle standsI can't get under to attach it. The workshop will do it one day when I am passing.

Yeah it's crazy I went home last night and turned on the ignition and checked all the lights and everything worked! I checked the loom in the boot as suggested and all looks nicely intact!

There must be a loose connection somewhere, it's sooo annoying! haha.

Cheers for all your help everyone!
Darran

Darran, it could be a cracked wire inside the loom. SOmetimes works, sometimes not, and sometimes it may sort out.
Ddraig

Yeah if it continues I'll get it looked at, any ideas if it's costly or just a 10mins job?
