MG MGF Technical - Rover 200 gearbox internals

OK the Rover 200 gearbox is a different shape from the F's gear box, however the question is could the internals be the same?

I have trashed my gearbox, and pretty muhc destroyed everything.

However the engineer working on my car reckons he might be able to source a Rover 200 gearbox for muhc cheapness and just swap over the internals, keeping the orginal housing etc.

Anyone an idea if this is feasible?

Else its time to start shopping about for a new gearbox.

Thanks

Paul, sorry to say that your R200 probably uses a R65 gearbox (used with all K-series engines with a capacity up to 1.6 litres) which is not only different from the outside, but the internals are completely different too :o(

Might be worth checking the usual sources to see whether they are able to source an appropriate gearbox for you.

Just to get an idea of price to replace or recondition a gearbox, the one on my old Rover 216 Coupe (pre my F) became a little knackered - I guess an R65 as Rob says above - cost me £800+ to get it recon'd (well, rebuilt) and put back in the car.. and that wasn't from a main dealer... Paul, I hope I was kind of ripped off and you get a cheaper deal...

800 quid on a gearbox rebuild would be cheap. Had this prospect just before Christmas with my car. Happily I was able to source a second hand PG1 from the MGF Centre for a fraction of the cost of rebuilding the old one.

Incidently, even a brand new PTP close-ratio gearbox costs 900 notes - and is cheaper to buy than a new standard gearbox from Rover - might be worth considering?

The F surely uses the Honda designed gearbox out of the Rover 800. Is this a source for a reconditioned box?
Patrick

This document shows the various PG1 appications - from it you should be able to find an alternative source for the parts.

Yes. And no.

Yes, the R800 did use a PG1 gearbox. And so did 1.8 litre 200s, 400s and probably 600s too. As did 2.0 litre versions of these same cars, and to which you can add the lovely Maestro and Montego.

But all the above cars use different gear ratio sets. I *think* that the only other car to use the same cluster set as the MGF was the Lotus Elise - and you don't find many of them in scrap yards.

So the bottom line is - 'it depends on what is wrong with your gearbox'. If yours is anything like mine, then it is the hubs on the gears that have worn out - which means you are out of luck as I don't believe you can recondition or replace the hubs on the gears :o( Best discuss this with your engineer Paul, and see what is possible.

Err. How did you trash your gear box
S Laithwaite

Thanks guys.

When looking at the "RAVE" guide for the Rover 200, it seems that they had both the R65 and the PG1 gearboxes, so might be an option.

£900 for the ptp gearboxes defiantely sounds tempting, especially as this seems to be dragging on a bit.

How did I trash the gearbox? err dunno.

I have been told that the bearings in the gearbox are a common failure point.

And I foolishly drove the car with damaged bearings, and ended up damaging some other components.

Namely some distribution shaft and distrubution gear.
Though on closer examination, it seems a few other components are damaged also.

Yup, the engineer also said it would cost more to srip and rebuild the gear box than buying a new one.

Well given PTP a call.

Looks like I'll be ordering their gearbox, lightened flywheel and a couple of other pieces.

They reckon a 2 day turnaround, so depending on how busy the garage is, could get car back by the weekend? Well I can but hope.

paul weatherill

Look forward to hearing your impressions of their gearbox Paul. I already have their lightened flywheel, and it has transformed the character of the engine. Lovely :o)

Ouch!! Well I guessed it was going to be pricey.

So mid-next week hopefully.

Don't know if it's any help Paul - but now is a great time of year to look in breakers yards...
I got a PG-1 gearbox with 30,000 miles on it for £300 and around £100 to get it fitted. HTH

Cheers
