MG MGF Technical - Shipping MGF to Australia advice

Hi
There is a possibilty that I could be emigrating to Australia in the next few months, and I am not sure whether to sell or to ship my F over.

Car is '99 S reg, 72K miles, very good condition.

Can anyone give me an idea on what it would cost to ship it over to Oz, or would it be worth selling and then buying one out there?

Thanks

Hi Cpudds,

try this link

Cheers,

The above site is for a temporary import. To register a vehicle it will have to comply with the relevent ADR's when the vehicle was made. ADR's are Australian Design Regulations which include local imision laws. side impact protection, speedo shows Km per hour, safty belts, lights and so on .Only authorised agenceys can do this work so that a compliance plate can be issued before a vehicle may be registered. On average I think between $3000- $5000.

Andrew, not quite right I suspect. Cpudds would no doubt be bringing it in as a Personal Import due to having owned it for a period of not less than 12 months. The regs are not so severe on Personal Imports. If he wants to pursue it I can put him in cotact with a relevant engineer. It would hardly seem viable I think given that you would have to pay GST and the shipping and perhaps some duty. Andrew, what is the trade value of such a car here today? By the time Cpuds converted his car in pounds then into dollars he could more than likely be able to buy a car here for the same dollars and avoid all the hassle.

Cpudds,

I did a further seach and found this companyh in you side of the world.

http://www.carshippingtoaustralia.com/australia/australia.html

It seems to have loads of info about shipping into Australia (and other places) and also regulations etc.
They say they have over 20 years experience of Motor Vehicle Shipping.

Branko, well done a very good site, but Cpudds must just confirm regulations as they were ammended in Jan 2005. David, you are right about pricing over here but F's can be very cheap in the UK and if it is owned since new duty and taxes after depreciation should still make it viable to import it BUT don't expect to make a profit. If you try and sell an import compared to a local vehicle there will have to be a large drop in price, no corrosion for a start.

Thanks guys for the advice, I think it just confirms my initial thoughts of selling it here and getting one over there. It seems alot of hassle otherwise.

Cpudds,
Check out MGF's for sale here:
http://www.carsales.com.au
and here:
http://www.drive.com.au/

Just do a seach in the search windows and it will show you loads of cars for sale.

David,
yes the "GST and the shipping and perhaps some duty" will bump up the cost of it all.

Andrew,
the amended regs are for vehicles over 15 years.
You can import your car if you have proof you drove it for more than 12 months. Then you can do it as a personal import.

Here is the site with regs etc.
