MG MGF Technical - Slick shift - unhooking cables from lever

All,

I'm fitting the latest generation of MS slick shift. I have the original ss on my 96 VVC. How do I undo the cables from the the gear lever mechanism. They are connected by rose joints. Help ...

Gaz,

They prise off. Have a look at my site at www.members.aol.com/apttony/ and hopefully all should be clear

These do NOT prise off in your case Gaz, they have to be unscrewed.

Mike, reading the post again,I realise I go it wrong, heīs the original SSK I, not the OE item. For these indeed you have to screw of the coutner bolt first! Same system as the SSKII I presume.
Sorry for the wrong advice.

Well ... looks like my bad luck continues just returned to my communal car park to find a large scratch and dent on the rear drivers side panel. The same panel that was replaced a couple of months ago following a run in with a hgv ... I can hazard a guess it might be one of the builders vehicles that have hit it. The flats are having some renovation work done commisioned by the managing agents. The trucks have been parked close to my car over the past few days but without a witness looks like I'll have to stump up the cash. Not a good day ...

Ouch Gaz...
:-(

Sorry to hear that.

Ok I've just about got the mechanism off ... I have no socket for the ML bolt on the SRS unit. On Tony's site he seems to suggest that removing just the one bolt (with the earth wire attached should allow the whole SRS unit to be removed ... I take it it is actually 4 bolts around the SRS unit that need removing.

... this re-fit has turned out alot easier than I thought ... tedious and tricky in some places but fairly straight forward ... should have done it a week ago ...

Good info Tony ...

A standard 8/10mm socket should fit.

... finally ... its fitted, after two weeks of procrastination. Its an improvement over the SSK1. The old kit was now fairly loose compared to when it was first installed. The gearstick is even shorter as the SSK1 made use of the oem lever. Also the new lever sits closer to the driver.
I took the opportunity to swap the clock and oil temp gauge - they really are in the 'wrong' position.
Thanks to MS for his help ... the old bits will be on their way to you soon ... by the way I had to buy a 10mm star socket to remove the bolts on the SRS unit.

Gaz,

Having re-looked at my site, I must agree that the note on undoing the SRS is misleading. 'G' only refers to the bolt with the earth wire. Oops!
I'll get it updated asap.

Nor did I realise that the fittings on your earlier SS were different. Apologies.
