MG MGF Technical - Sound cammy

I posted this over on the Z board - no response as yet. May be you guys would like to comment?

I was 'following' a Porsche Carrera this morning and after I had parked the driver, who used to race Triumphs, came over to me. He said that my engine sounded cammy - probably a dry valve.

Comments?

It was jealousy!

If you had to drive a Carrera every day you would soon resent MG owners.

Possible sticking tappet?
Bob Millar

Cammy? could mean it idles unevenly.
Or it's making a camshaft ratle noise.
It could be just the little rattle that the engines have when cold, many makes do this as the toleraces are set for hot engines so they dont seize when hot!
When the engine warms it all goes away!

If it's a dry tappet, just give the car a good long drive at revs over 3000 and it should pump itself up again.

Naaaaaaaa It's jealousy in my mind!!!

A camshaft going makes a very clear and loud knocking noise, not too dissimilar to big ends going!!
Old Capri's were good for this.
Neil

Loud tappet noise is frequently the first sign of a low oil level - so probably a good idea to check this if you haven't already Ralph!

But following my recent debarcle with the constant tapping that came from the engine. Check the exhaust first.

Or in my case it was actually the oil filler/ dipstick that was rattling at certain RPMs.

At first I was convinced it was a tappet!

Neil, the comment was made after I had driven 70 miles, 10 of them following the Carrera at high speed.

I've checked the oil level. Looks like Rob was right, it was down at the minimum. I checked the level about two weeks ago and it was 1/4 way below maximum. I've check for oil leaks can't see any obvious one's. Seems that I've used about 1/2 litre of oil in two weeks (approximately 1500 miles).
